This video explains the financial structure of ancient Israel's government and social welfare system, which was based on a system of tithes rather than income or sales tax [00:09].There were three main types of tithes in the Old Testament:Priestly Tithe: As mentioned in Numbers 18:24-26, this was a 10% contribution of produce to support the Levites, who were dedicated to the ministry of the temple and tabernacle and were not self-supporting [01:37].Festival Tithe: Described in Deuteronomy 14:22, this second tithe also supported the Levitical system and the continuation of sacrifices [02:20].Tithe for the Needy: Collected every third year and stored in local towns, this tithe, found in Deuteronomy 14:28, supported the Levites and also served as a social safety net for the poor, including aliens, orphans, and widows [02:49].In total, these three tithes amounted to approximately 23% of a person's income, functioning as a form of taxation.
