Reading Room 2006 Aug 11

from Kaleidoscope's Reading Room · host Keri Holmes

Keri takes a look at two books for children, A Frog Thing, and A Chance to Shine; talks about an upcoming author visit; and announces a give-away of The Dressmaker by Elizabeth Oberbeck.

In this week's episode of The Reading Room, Keri reads from two books for children, and announces an upcoming author visit and book give-away. A Frog Thing by Eric Drachman, illustrated by James Muscarello tells the story of a frog named Frank, who wants to fly. Frank's parents have told him he can do anything he sets his mind to, but when they find out that he wants to fly, they tell him that flying isn't "a frog thing." Parents, teachers and children will love this book about accepting ourselves as we really are, but still holding on to our dreams. A Chance to Shine by Steve Seskin & Allen Shamblin, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie tells the story of a boy whose dad owns a shop, and gives a job to Joe who sits outside the store everyday. The boy asks his dad why they're helping this man, and his dad replies, "Because every heart needs a chance to shine." Joe is transformed by this act of kindness, and the boy learns to see people in a new way. The book comes with a CD that has the story set to music. Kids will love the book and the song, and will want to sing it over and over again. Charles Hugh Smith, author of i-state lines, will be visiting the Kaleidoscope on September 16. Keri will be talking with Smith on a future episode of The Reading Room. The Dressmaker by Elizabeth Oberbeck was featured on the July 14th episode. The publisher has offered a free copy of the book to two Reading Room listeners. Details on the program. True Family Men David Johnson Hey I’m David Johnson founder of True Family Men. I believe the lord has called me to build a strong community of men. The mission of this community is to allow men to learn from one another's successes and failures in marriage and parenting. The True Family Men Podcast was born to give men a platform to share their testimonies of how Jesus Christ has brought them out of life greatest challenges and how to begin the healing process. We as men face many problems in life from lust, pornography addiction, drug and alcohol addiction, anger, stress, false sense of manliness, the list is endless, but through a strong community of believers and the redeeming power of christ's blood we can overcome! I enjoy camping, eagle scouting, hiking, and the weekly chic-fila splurges!
