Reading Sample Audio 2
from The Super Geniuses · host Susan Kesselring
In this audio, Azezza reads for our team. She is eager and wants to do her best. You can here me reassure her that it's not for a grade. She reads the first passage, "The Fog," which is on a second grade level. She confuses cloud for "clode," but reads relatively well, accept she does not stop for punctuation. When I turned the page to a third grade level, "Shark Teeth," you can hear her audibly gasp on tape, for she saw more words on a page that were closer together. Yet, when she read this passage, as you will hear, she read with better fluency and less errors. When I ask her which passage she prefers, she tells me the first passage with less words. I'm not sure what to think of this, because as you will see, she reads the 3rd grade passage more confidently than the 2nd grade passage, in which she says she is comfortable. What do you think team? Following the reading, she talks to me a little bit about a movie she saw. She said it was scary and can relate to the first story because she saw fog this morning and connects its images to the scary movie. She tells me, in the movie, bugs cover the window, and says that it kept her up all night crying. When I ask her if she has a stuffed animal to comfort her, she tells me "their eyes are scary." Those plastic, round perfectly colored eyes are, in fact, scary and I can relate. I can't help but think she is exposed to drama beyond her years, as in her written narrative about digging up her cat.
