Hi I'm Megan Segura And I'm Eric J. Mack And this is the Daily Dish Bravo's official podcast So as we mentioned In Thursday's Regularly scheduled episode We were going to be Recording a bonus episode We wanted to take a look Back at Real Housewives Of Atlanta season 5 Specifically episode 7 and 8 Otherwise known as Trip to Anguilla Gone with the Wind Fabulous And who better To help Eric and I Break it down Than martinis and murder host John Thrasher Hi Also that's my title Here in the office But also Real Housewives Atlanta aficionado Right It would also work as well Thank you Thanks for having me guys Thanks for coming I'm so excited Because these were the episodes That really locked me in And I think as an Atlanta fan I feel like a lot of people's It was kind of like this So when you guys asked me If I would come on I was like yes I don't even care Whatever you need to do I will come in and tell you Anything that you want to know Yeah I mean looking back At this season It's like the peak cast Like Kim is there Phaedra We got Portia Kenya's fairly new This was what her This was her season Right yeah So I mean we have like This is a real special time In Atlanta history I agree And sorry Megan This is your show please Okay I was just saying I became a huge fan of Kenya And in these moments That we'll get to But I know Kenya's very divisive People either love her Or hate her Or love to hate her Whatever you might want to say But I became such a big fan And then I found out Like two seasons later That she and I have The same birthday That's right January 24th I know Happy belated I meant to actually text you That I realized It was also my birthday Thanks I actually met Kenya At an Upfront For those who don't know What an Upfront is It's like a big industry event Where like all the big stars Of a network come out And they try to sell ads And it's You've probably heard of it If you're listening to this podcast And I met Kenya And I was with Darren Of course Andy's assistant And my co-host on Martini's and murder And I was like the only person I want to talk to At this NBCUniversal Upfront is Kenya Sure enough she comes in She's walking She has a beautiful yellow gown Or a dress on And I'm like Darren I'm like a little starstruck And I don't really get starstruck There's like a handful of people That I want to meet in life Kenya's one of them And David Archuleta Thank you Lady Gaga's the third Exactly thank you But I saw Kenya And I was like She's like yes just go She'll talk to you And I was like okay So I walk up And I'm like hi Kenya I'm like such a big fan And by the way We have the same birthday And she was just like Uh huh okay And I was like right That's not that interesting To you who doesn't know me It was really awkward Well it's interesting to me Yeah thank you Yes thanks But it was just like A funny like sad moment In my life It's interesting you mentioned How Kenya is so divisive I feel like yeah And these two episodes Reminded me of why Let's start from the beginning From the very first thing Okay so we start with The Real Housewives All gathering to talk about The trip they're going to go on Right Kenya invites herself I forgot about that point Because frankly to be honest I don't follow all the other Housewives franchises But I always just assumed Everyone's invited Is that not true as Bravo It's not always true No because it's basically Organized by one of the women And not all of them Are always on good terms On these shows So it doesn't always The invitation doesn't Reach everybody always Because I just assume Working in television myself That you know Everyone in the cast Is on the trip I don't know Maybe that's not how it always goes That's why I love this Because it's multi-layered Because if you're not Invited to the trip Less camera time Oh exactly Which is a big thing frankly Well Kenya there's room For her on this trip Because Kim is like I can't go on way too pregnant I'm sorry Everyone's like what the hell Kim And then it's revealed That she's going on another trip With Kroy So it really just goes to show Where Kim is at right now With these women This was her famous exit From Real Housewives I forgot that Kim And Kenya overlapped Because I always kind of Associated them with Different eras of the show And this episode Just surprised me by that Do you miss Kim As a Real Housewife Or do you like her Where she is Like in the world Of just her family That's a really good question Because Kim was such a crucial Part of the earliest parts Of the season With Nene And so because of that I think she has such a Huge influence on the show I mean even in the More recent seasons Where she was just Kind of popping in From time to time Those were like big episodes For long time fans of the show So I like where she is I wish Kim the best And I want her to be I want her to be happy I think And you know I do feel like The rivalry between her And like Nene and stuff Like we've seen so much of that That it's time to I want Kim to Just do what she does best And sometimes that's just being You know the family woman Which I think is great for her Do you know a fun fact About Kim Solsiak And I think Megan knows this And it might actually be More known that she is afraid Of elevators And so when she comes Into the office She takes the stairs No she does not And Bravo headquarters Ladies and gentlemen Is on the 12th floor And 14 And 14 If she has to go up there So Kim refuses to take the elevator She's claustrophobic She hates it She takes the stairs I kind of understand that But like I hope she got Like a leg work You know like she's Like giving room for her leg work She's always in heels So I don't know She must take them off For the stairs But I'm always like Girl damn Can't you just close your eyes For 30 seconds Yeah I didn't know that about her I know this is somewhat related Fred Armisen is also like that From SNL And he was on a serious show I was listening to Which is on like the 36th floor And I'm like Do people walk up that many stairs To do their jobs Like it's not worth it I'd rather make stuff I'd rather make stuff Right Trip is organized Kenya invites herself Cynthia invites Portia Right Because initially Portia isn't invited Well she's not at the lunch She's at the lunch That's right Are they technically Housewives at this point Like they have their peaches Yes Okay just making sure that's clear But I know that sometimes They don't know that Going into a season Right That's what I was wondering Because I remember Kenya and Portia Weren't like you know Fully meanie league style Yeah Because producers will watch And they're like Is their story compelling enough And we want to focus on that this season So I don't know that they knew They were real housewives at the time Right That's true So yes that's right Cynthia does invite Portia But it's on what's supposed to be A double date With Peter, Cynthia, Cordell, and Portia But Cordia Cordell is mysteriously busy M.I.A. because he's working Right But he's a football player Exactly And it's summer And I kind of felt bad Because Peter was so excited to meet him He's a huge football fan And like Cordell was like The slash or what do they call him He had this nickname And like Peter was so excited He was like I like to golf I like to do all these things He didn't even really like to golf Like he was just trying to fake I think How much he wanted to hang out with Cordell Yeah Peter's coming off As a real star f***er And it was the first time That Portia had met Peter Which like when I look back And see these intros And these things I'm just always like Oh my god I forgot Like this was a big moment Looking back on it now Yeah I agree We also learned in terms of firsts In this episode That it's when Todd Moves in with Candy For the very first time So much happened in these two episodes And like set up the rest of the season And we see like little Riley And Mama Joyce says to Candy I really like Todd I know Which is like probably the only time She ever said that I know You should like isolate that And make it like a sound effect On the show It's so true Yeah I mean Mama Joyce We haven't seen much of her This season and kind of lately She popped up a little bit last season But we haven't seen as much of her Do you guys working at Bravo And like obviously Almost every housewife I'm assuming Has been into the studio So if I could just dive in To why Kenya was just a lot for me In this episode First of all As we discussed She invited herself on the trip Second of all Like she's just She wants to be the center of attention At all times I always hear this debate But keep going I have a counterpoint to that So from the second they get on Like the speedboat to get to the island She's like I'm going to drive it And then you have this whole situation With her boyfriend Walter And non-stop asking him When he's going to propose Which I don't even know How long they've dated At this point It seems very new It seems very new by that point And I agree I think that that was a bit much For her to constantly Be bringing that up with him Yes I agree with you But that's what I kind of liked about her I like that she wasn't Kind of just willing to like You know sit in the back And hope something comes With their friendships Like she really I think Took the show and the opportunity By its horns And wanted to be a part of it Like everyone else And you know maybe there's A little bit of like Business television stuff with that But I don't know There was just something About her confidence I really liked And I love that she was just Kind of a wild card With that group of people Like you weren't really sure Where everyone stood with her Especially obviously with Phaedra Which we'll get into But I don't know There was something about That personality trait That I just thought really worked For this show And it made me really really Interested to see what was Going to happen next with her And did you like the fact That she was flirting With Phaedra's husband Is that something That you co-signed? No No it's good to know It wasn't just Phaedra's husband It was like towards the end Of this episode She's talking to like She's asking about sperm donors She is like That's what I'm saying though Because it felt like I felt like when I was watching The show I'm just trying To kind of remember How I was feeling But was it really flirting I mean yes Okay I know Listen I know that we since As doctorates in housewives Have established that But at the same time Like well now I'm just getting Pictures of like Apollo like throwing her Into the pool But she started it She took him into the pool Which honestly let's be real Any one of us would have Used that excuse To touch Apollo Yeah by the way So I don't blame Kenya But like right in front Of Apollo's wife Not good Right in front of Walter To kind of make him jealous Not good But that's what I mean Like do you really think It was flirtatious When she was trying To be eloping with Walter I mean I think it might Just be Kenya having fun And like pushing A little bit of a button She also grinded with Peter And made a little sandwich With Cynthia and Peter So at least she was being Like equally flirtatious With everyone's husband But she even said in her interview Was I flirting with Apollo I don't know She was She was I think the answer is yes And then goes out to Apollo And Phaedra Puts her arms around both of them It's like Phaedra You were going to pick Two friends My question is Was she proposing Not just a threesome But a foursome Because she asked for two friends Or a threesome Was Phaedra not there I don't know Exactly that was my question I was like okay two friends Like is it that means That the actual wife Is not included in this scenario But Because that might be crossing a line Right I mean actually for me That's the part I found Least offensive Because I love a hypothetical So like you can't Offend me with one I'll just say Sitting next to Megan She does love a hypothetical We all sit together She'll just blurt them out In the office And we're like fine If you had to It's like Megan's back at it again But no I see what you're saying I just feel like For some reason I didn't read it as like Harmful I guess is the best way to put it Because I don't know I don't know There's so much to dissect Because it's like Then you think about Phaedra And Apollo's relationship Well everything we know now Exactly Well speaking of Phaedra too She shows up the next morning With that like thong Oh my god Very provocative outfit And she's like listen She's like I'm going to reclaim My territory And like really that moment To come back And pretty much everyone on the stage Said Phaedra And the audience went wild People were screaming Applauding like She is such a fan favorite And it's just like The way she exited Was not good But you know Time has passed And the other thing too Is I feel like with Housewives And maybe this is a little insidery But I feel like some Housewives Take a couple seasons off And then like maybe come back If it's the right time And I feel like now is the time Phaedra We need Phaedra back in her thong bikini As quickly as possible I mean imagine we got Kenya back But how would Candy react to that news Well that's it Megan That would just be fun of it all That would get everyone to watch I mean she was able to move on With Portia after that whole thing So you know Trying to say Sorry I'm getting so excited I'm jumping everywhere So a couple years ago Portia came into the office And you know we had these meet and greets With the Housewives Where like they'll sit down With an interviewer Just for Bravo and Oxygen employees And Portia came in And I got to ask a question Which was I cannot believe that Portia and Kenya Ever became friends After like the reunion episode And everything that went down For several seasons And Portia had such a great answer And it was just like You know what Like we were able to let that go We're better people now I won't say she's like my best friend But it was such a mature answer Because like those early days In a sense I love that At that point I think because You know being on this trip The last interaction they had Was Portia like throwing Kenya Out of a party I think they didn't have Respect for each other at that point And the relationship They were able to build since then And what we see on this last season They're both moms now They've both been through a lot Relationship wise They've grown a lot being on the show So I think they've found Their common ground And they've found some Mutual respect for each other Will that last forever?
Who knows with this show I do want to talk about The evolution of Portia though Because this being her first season It was so weird to watch Like she's so different now I feel Definitely 100% Especially in the early parts Of this season Where like Dennis Wasn't really there for her And I just remember being like So heartbroken for her She seemed so upset There was even a moment Where like her mom Was just crying for her And it's just like That's I think a lot of growth In and of itself Even if it's sad It's like just seeing her care About this type of stuff And like you know I don't know It's just a whole different world From where she was with Cordell Which felt very problematic to me As a viewer I'll just put it that way Yeah Well I think that she was much more Of your like stereotypical housewife Where you know She was seen and not heard necessarily Exactly That's what I mean by That's a better way to put it I was just trying to be Like I don't think that Portia would ever say that now No And I feel like that shows A lot of growth as well Just because that word Has a lot of weird connotation to it And Portia I feel like Like you were kind of saying Eric Has a lot more respect Not just for Kenya But for like the other wives Yeah It's definitely a trigger word For these women In a similar way that we've seen On like Orange County Or on Dallas When the word like trash comes up Where they call behavior trashy I feel like when I heard Portia say that to Kenya I was like Ooh that's a trigger word For these ladies Yeah I think just in general Like in society It's just like a word You don't want to throw around But she kind of like Just dropped it Like it was nothing Well and it kind of speaks To maybe how she viewed herself As this person who was part Of Atlanta's society And she's carrying on Her grandfather's legacy But like now she describes Herself as like Princess of Thotlandia You know what I mean So it's like Yeah It's like a really big change But I think it's a good change Because I feel like She's totally owning her sexuality And just like taking complete control Of who she is and her identity Where I feel like In these early moments with her Maybe that wasn't quite the case as much Yeah I don't know if she would say that But I think as a viewer You kind of get that impression So going to kind of the root Of where the fight actually begins It was sort of Nini Who maybe was the one to instigate Which doesn't come as a surprise To all of us She was such a potster I mean I think that's sort of Just a character trait Of hers at this point But she basically asks What happened between Portia and Kenya When Kenya was thrown out of the party And I think that is what creates The monster that becomes this argument Right well so the basis Is that at Portia's party Her like fundraiser event She introduced Kenya As Miss America Instead of Miss USA Now that is one thing That I really don't agree with With Kenya She should not have reacted that way Because Who knows the difference Who A in general Knows the difference Who isn't in the pageant circuit You know what I mean And B it's just not something I feel like you should hold against someone And so like I feel like Kenya Who was in the pageant circuit And frankly I know some people In the pageant circuit Who are just like Kenya Very adamant about those two things Because they are actually Very different titles But like I feel like Kenya Was personally offended Like she knew those differences And was trying to sort of Put her in a box But it's like Can you give her the benefit of the doubt Although maybe she shouldn't Because it turned out to be great television That's true And I want anyone listening To tell us Me Which is better Miss America or Miss USA I don't know What is Candace from Potomac she was also a beauty queen but I don't recall which title but I can see her reacting the same way Kenya would about like if you got her title wrong she would correct you real quick but I think that's what Kenya's kind of like toss up with that whole thing was was because one of them maybe was less intellectual potentially or something like that that's true yeah it's funny because like to the regular lay person like we may not know the difference but to Kenya it was like mind altering terrible things right now looking at the big major moment that was Gone with the Wind fabulous like think about it season 5 you know social media was a thing but it wasn't as big as it is now and just thinking of like when you search for gifs now of Kenya more like that is one of the first ones that will come up and it's one of the ones like I use Kenya pretty often in my you know gif moments that I need to share with my friends your repertoire gif and I don't use that one as much as I should but I feel like there's a lot of other like hey yes there's one of those but just like the pop cultural impact that that moment had is like it's insane she became an instant star by that one line that one scene that was maybe 20 seconds long and if you go back and watch the scene it's really interesting because you kind of you can see like Nini and Phaja are recognizing like the moment I feel like like Phaja kind of steps back and like kind of gives her the moment because you know she's literally twirling fabulous and then like the rest the thing about everything that happened after that like the song and the twirl like Beyonce was like in on the joke I think for a little bit and I just find it to be one of the most iconic moments in Housewives history but even in pop culture I think everyone was watching that clip after it happened it's funny because I agree that they like knew that was a good moment because beforehand these Pershing Kenya were hurling these insults at each other like you're a hoe well you have a tramp stamp well you're old I wasn't even alive when you won your title and like the whole time Phaja's drinking out of a teacup and she looks so unbothered like not even phased yeah yeah that's amazing I also love the follow up like right after that where Nini's like well I didn't know this was movie night it was just like every part of that like two minute segment was just amazing and Eric you make such a good point about the gif because now we even have evolved since then I think in pop culture where like you know Instagram memes and TikToks and all this stuff like if that would have happened now I feel like it would have been even bigger because it would have been memefied into ways we would have never even imagined totally yeah and it's funny you bring up TikTok like that's so true and I know that Bravo is like we have a presence on TikTok now and they are well they are uploading famous lines and some of them have my favorite part of that moment is when she goes I'm still here I'm still fabulous like it was almost like how does somebody like in a moment know that like how to deliver such an amazing moment I don't know how to explain it it's just like it obviously wasn't rehearsed but like it just felt so natural and I think that's why I just loved it so much I'm like if this woman is capable of this I am in and I want to be her biggest fan for the next several seasons I think you can almost see it in her eyes like there's a moment that she realizes like she's having a moment and she's just like I'm fabulous I'm fabulous and then you see it it like lights up in her eyes and she's like gone with the wind and was like ooh I think he's going to propose tonight and Cynthia's like I don't know is he my mom's not even here like whatever looking back at this episode I was almost waiting for Kenya to spoil the surprise for Cynthia like again but I was like oh no I don't think she does I remember the moment it's a surprise and it ends up being a really beautiful moment for Cynthia and everybody that they kind of shared together but I was like oh is Kenya going to ruin this well I had honestly forgotten they did the vow renewal me too and now we know and it's the curse of the vow renewal if you renew your vows you're going to get divorced is that if you renew your vows in general or if you renew your vows on reality television I was just going to say is it the real housewives of Atlanta specifically wait where does this come from I'm interested in your background with this Megan Vicky Gumbelson divorced Ramona divorced Cynthia and Peter are they still friends well Cynthia and Peter I think they are because shortly after their divorce Noel met up with him and was like you're still important in my life I think they must have some kind of relationship you know just sitting around you guys and all the housewives that come through Cynthia and Peter have come through a couple of times first of all Cynthia is so beautiful it's offensive it's like she's obviously beautiful on camera and she's a model and everything but seeing her in person is shocking and then Peter has always been around too with her sometimes he wouldn't even be here to do stuff he would just be with her and he was always so friendly with us around the office he's a handsome devil and that beard there's something about that and actually so funny enough Cynthia was my very first interview that I did for the podcast and I just remember looking at her cheekbones and I was just like I can't believe she looks like this it's like the creator got down and was like what is a perfect human face looking going to look like and it's her I remember when she came in and I did an interview and someone was like let's get a photo of you too and I was like I've been more aware of that too lately just because of oxygen just being around everybody do we have to take a picture with very beautiful celebrity television people because I'm just like a oh sure I'll stand next to this perfect specimen and feel great about myself afterwards I was literally on my tiptoes and came up to her shoulder I think Megan you're beautiful and don't let anyone talk about this for real yeah she's crying I will say too speaking of Cynthia and Kenya and Rob O'Connor I got to do an interview with them as well and to your point earlier about being like I just want to meet Kenya like I spent most of Rob O'Connor being like oh my god I just want to meet Kenya like I hope I get to talk to her or whatever and they came over and they were both so much fun and so great and they had really great chemistry and I wasn't you know you never know when you see these women after the show is done filming like where they may stand with each other so I was like well they're coming over together they must be fine and they were a lot of fun and they were talking about you know Kenya planning Cynthia's wedding to Mike Hill and all the stuff she had planned so I was very excited about that and did Kenya remember that we have the same birthday she did she was like hey dude fun fact I share a birthday with someone in his office so good to know John Fasher from Martinez and McGregor I'm sure it was top of mind for her Rob O'Connor to mention that so to wrap up whatever happens to Walter do we have to wrap up I don't know I can do this forever she wanted me to pretend for the camera she disputes that I guess you have to think about how they because is that him just trying to get one on back on her I don't think so I mean the whole these two episodes the way Nini talks to Kenya about their relationship I feel like it was her speaking on behalf of the viewers because I think we were all a little bit like who is this guy where did he come from she's already talking about marrying him I don't know about this and when they're getting massages it's really funny because Nini's calling her out and they're all topless and trying to relax and Kenya's getting fired up because Nini's asking her all these questions but something tells me there wasn't some real deep love there I agree but what also comes to mind is Kenya's other relationships that have been featured on the show and is that truly who she would go for I felt like Matt was a real relationship I don't know if you guys agree but it did feel authentic and very problematic so I don't know I hope that she finds the love of her life and can be truly happy because that's the other thing too about these early seasons is you see her getting frustrated about this marriage proposal and even if it's not authentic I feel like she's passionate about wanting to be married and wanting to have a family and obviously she had a baby eventually so I really remember feeling so heartbroken for her when you think about her backstory and everything that she's been through and that's the thing that I always go back to with Kenya because like you said she is very divisive some people like hate her they love her they love to hate her whatever it is I always kind of go back to where she came from and what she's been through and when I think of that I root for her even when she's shady or does things that I don't agree with or whatever it may be I kind of just bring myself back there and I'm like oh well I hope it works out for her at some point because I feel like sometimes people think that her extrovertedness I guess is the best way to put it is some sort of misguided frustration with her personal life this isn't my opinion this is what I hear from other fans and I just don't think that's what it is I want her just to be happy and herself and I just wanted to put that out there for anyone who thinks that way about her so there you go so there you go can we do Rose and Thorn for this episode oh yeah that's a great idea okay let's do Rose and Thorn so I will say that my rose was Phaedra talking about how she's not getting in a hot tub because she doesn't want bacterial vaginosis which fair yeah I can't think of a single girl who wants that right in that she referred to her vagina as a honeypot yes oh that's right that was good that's a good one damn that's a hard rose to top that is a good one I think I'm going to say when Cynthia's titty popped out on the boat because that was also kind of foreshadowing what happens at the end of season 6 at the reunion her titty popped out and it's all because of Portia and Kenya so that was my rose because we had a little foreshadowing there yeah my rose is obviously the Gone with the Wind fabulous moment which made me a huge fan of the show again and I think was a big moment for pop culture altogether yeah my thorn would be when Kenya went to see her and Walter's room in the villa and she's in front of the staff of this hotel just talking shit about the room like it's too small there's no tub oh my god there's no privacy and he goes it is our pleasure to have you here I think my thorn was at the beginning of episode 7 and it's when Kim walks out on the lunch because she's all mad and then Kroy starts getting into it with production oh yeah I forgot about that it's just sort of like bro okay just get in the car and go and then you'll be fine I just didn't like that aggression towards the crew this is a tough one because I love every moment of the reaction my thorn I would say there was a moment where I think Portia and Kenya right before the Gone with the Wind fabulous that whole fight where they were trying to entice someone to hit the other person and I'm like okay we don't need to be doing that we love the show you guys are not you're not fighting over your families or the survival of your own life like let's be real here like you're on a trip like enjoy the time together John Megan this has been amazing it has been fun tell everyone about Martinis and Murder yeah so if you are into true crime podcasts you might want
