Reclaiming Wholeness: The New Language of Masculinity | Mark Grayson
from Rooted & Wild · host Henry Hawk
What if masculinity isn't something men need to abandon—but something they're being called to expand? In this episode, I sit down with Mark Grayson to explore what it means to be a man in a culture where many of the old definitions of masculinity no longer seem sufficient.Through his writing, conversations, and work with the Naked Man Collective, Mark has spent years examining the expectations placed on men: strength, success, independence, emotional restraint, certainty—and what can happen when those expectations leave little room for vulnerability, intimacy, tenderness, self-examination, and the full range of human experience. Our conversation explores a new language of masculinity—one that doesn't require men to reject strength, but invites them to reconsider what strength actually means. We talk about vulnerability without weakness, emotional honesty, relationships, identity, purpose, and the courage required to become more fully ourselves. At the heart of the conversation is the idea of wholeness: integrating the parts of ourselves we've been taught to hide rather than continuing to perform a narrow version of who we're supposed to be.This isn't about defining the "right" way to be a man. It's about creating more room for men to discover who they actually are.In this episode, we explore:• How traditional ideas of masculinity shape men's identities• Why many men struggle with vulnerability and emotional expression• Expanding our definition of strength• The difference between performing masculinity and inhabiting it authentically• Relationships, intimacy, and emotional connection• The pressures men experience around success and self-reliance• Why vulnerability and strength aren't opposites• Moving beyond rigid expectations of what a man "should" be• Reclaiming the parts of ourselves we've learned to suppress• Masculinity as an evolving conversation rather than a fixed identity• What it means to move toward greater authenticity and wholenessAbout Mark GraysonMark Grayson's path has moved through education, media, social impact, spirituality, civic engagement, and writing. After working his way through Harvard College and Columbia Business School, Mark began his career in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles.
