La historia de la reforma agraria en las plantaciones bananeras del norte del Magdalena, una de las regiones agroindustriales tradicionales de Colombia, ilustra tanto el alcance de una política de desarrollo rural sin precedentes como el rápido fallo de su componente redistributivo. Este artículo explora, a nivel local, la evolución de las estrategias que empresarios, funcionarios y campesinos emplearon para promover, debilitar o dirigir la reforma agraria hacia la redistribución o la modernización agrícola. Mediante el análisis de archivos institucionales, publicaciones oficiales y académicas y entrevistas de historia oral, esta investigación destaca el papel clave de los actores locales. Demuestra que el uso de la violencia ha sido un instrumento importante para limitar la redistribución de la tierra, así como la contrarreforma política y la presión del mercado sobre las explotaciones reformadas.
