Reel Talk: Casablanca

from Faith & Culture · host Lake Ridge Bible Church

In August, we are taking a break from the Book Nook to embark on a journey through movies for the rest of 2023 we call Reel Talk! Each month we will be watching (and encouraging our listening audience to watch) a film that we think captures an important conversation in our culture. We go to the movies for the thrills, the laughs, the drama, the romance. We go for these things but what if we walk away with something else… a worldview, and sometimes — a lie. In this series, we explore one small corner of the world of cinema and ask, “why are some movies good and other movies… false?” These films will challenge us to think deeply about the needs and desires of our society and what kind of heroic action it will take to turn things around. We also hope to model how to get more out of your movies and see more clearly the messages Hollywood is sending us all the time! All of our films are selected to be totally family friendly! We begin our series by looking at the classic wartime film Casablanca (1942) starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. This black and white drama follows Rick, a self-centered nightclub owner, who holds the key to escaping the Nazis for a French resistance leader. However, his past complicates things when an old flame returns and Rick must choose between a noble cause and the desires of his heart. Watch it as a family and then join the adventure next month in Reel Talk!
