Refined by Fire — Let Go of the Net

Opening a verse-by-verse study of 1 and 2 Peter, this message introduces the apostle himself through 1 Peter 1:1–2 and the call narrative of Luke 5:1–11. Peter — Simon, the rock — is presented honestly: a man whose faith was often anything but rock-like, who stumbled, spoke rashly, and wrestled with deep prejudice, yet whom God used as a pillar of the church. The teaching clarifies why the church is built on Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah, not on Peter himself, and walks through his family, occupation, and companions to show an ordinary man God transformed. The heart of the message is the miraculous catch. After a fruitless night, an exhausted Peter is told to let the nets down again, against every fisherman's instinct. His obedience — “because you say so” — precedes the overwhelming catch and the new calling to fish for people.
