Refined by Fire — No Longer Afraid (1 Peter 3:13-22 thru 4:1-11)
from LifeWell Messages
Written to a persecuted church, 1 Peter 3:13–22 addresses fear directly. Some fears are reasonable; many are irrational anxieties that paralyze. Strikingly, many Christians fear going public with the very good news that frees people from death and fear. The teaching argues that boldness begins inwardly: revere Christ as Lord, not merely as Savior. The image of the “spiritual vampire” — wanting Jesus' blood for forgiveness but not his lordship over life — presses the point. Believers are to be ready to give a reason for their hope, to emphasize hope over argument, and to speak with gentleness and respect, since no one has ever been argued into heaven. The passage's harder verses on Christ's proclamation in the realm of the spirit lead to Peter's emphasis on baptism as the pledge of a clear conscience — immersion following a conscious confession, a decision no one can make for another.
