Refined by Fire — What's the Difference
from LifeWell Messages
How has Jesus changed your life? From 1 Peter 1:13–2:3, this message contrasts who we were before Christ with who we are after — from evil desires to obedience, from an empty way of life to a living hope, from outsiders to the family of God. Coming into Christ is a new birth, but like new muscle memory it feels awkward at first; the old self keeps trying to creep back in. Peter's command to “gird up the loins of your mind” is rendered as rolling up our sleeves: prepare the mind, prepare the heart, and pursue a holy nonconformity rather than being molded by the desires of our ignorant days. The teaching presses hard on the popular claim that “God just wants me to be happy,” arguing God will not prize our happiness over our holiness — yet his way is the only path to real joy. Redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, believers are urged to crave spiritual growth like newborns crave milk.
