Reflecting on the March and March Protests - What’s next?

Anti-immigrant protesters were on the streets across South Africa today after their deadline forundocumented foreigners to leave the country expired at midnight. Despite the tenseanticipation, police across the country reported by first light that they had not yet recorded anymajor incidents linked to the planned action.The looming threat has already sparked a massive displacement crisis. More than 25,000foreigners have been bussed out of the country, while thousands more have fled their homes toseek safety. These individuals are currently taking refuge in repatriation centres, consulates, andmakeshift camps.In response to the crisis, the state has deployed thousands of police officers and soldiersnationwide to prevent the protests from turning violent. This security operation has already costR600 million and counting.
