Some analysts have raised concerns over the new set of regulations in the Refugees Amendment Act which among other things stipulate that asylum seekers can lose their status if they participate in any political activity or activity related to their country of origin in South Africa as well as clamping down on businesses and regulations on where they can work or go to school. The changes came into effect on the first of January. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi gazetted the new regulations on 27 December and has defended the decision saying that the new rules only apply to people who are under protection of state. But some legal experts have described them as a ‘paper wall’ to keep migrants out of South Africa.
