Regeneration | John Owen

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into Regeneration by John Owen In his treatise on regeneration, John Owen explains that spiritual rebirth is an absolute necessity for salvation and is accomplished exclusively through the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit. Because humanity is fallen and spiritually dead in sin, individuals are entirely incapable of delivering themselves or choosing God by their own natural abilities. Owen argues strongly against the idea that regeneration occurs merely through moral suasion, which is the belief that the gospel simply persuades the human mind through rational arguments and outward motives. While God does use the preaching of the word as an external instrument, this persuasion alone cannot confer new spiritual strength or overcome the innate depravity of the human heart. Instead, regeneration requires a real, physical, and immediate internal operation of the Holy Spirit. In this divine act, the Spirit infuses a new supernatural principle of spiritual life directly into the soul. This inward work is victorious, infallible, and irresistible, ensuring that God's purpose is always accomplished without fail. However, Owen clarifies that this grace does not violently compel the human will against its natural capacity. Rather, the Spirit profoundly transforms the individual's faculties from within, so that the person freely and willingly turns to God. This comprehensive spiritual renewal affects the entire soul. The Holy Spirit removes spiritual blindness by enlightening the mind to understand divine truths savingly. The will is freed from its innate obstinacy and powerfully guided toward faithful obedience. Additionally, the affections are purified from carnal prejudices and filled with a prevailing love and delight for God. Ultimately, Owen concludes that regeneration is entirely a gracious, creating act of God, in which the human will is completely passive in its first beginning.
