Remembering K-Paul's and Julia Reed

from Louisiana Eats · host Poppy Tooker

2020 has been a tumultuous year filled with loss – and the toll on our hospitality industry continues with many restaurants having to shutter their doors after decades in business. One of New Orleans' most significant losses came in July when K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen closed permanently. Chef Paul Prudhomme and his wife Kay opened the restaurant in 1979, making it into one of the most popular eating places in the city and among the most influential in the United States.  On this week's show, we remember K-Paul's and all the magical things that happened there with Sandy Hanson – who was at K-Paul’s from the day they opened the doors – and from her brother-in-law, Chef Frank Brigtsen – who credits his culinary success to his friend and mentor, a man he simply calls chef.  Then, we remember the indomitable, effervescent, and brilliant writer Julia Reed, who for decades covered politics, art, food, and hospitality in publications like Newsweek, Vogue, and The New York Times, while always advocating for the revival of her beloved Mississippi Delta home. Julia lost her battle with cancer in August of this year at the age of 59. On this show, we once again hear Julia at her rollicking, hilarious best.
