Nikki Giovanni, born Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr. on June 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee, emerged as a powerful voice in American poetry, celebrated for her contributions to the Black Arts Movement and her profound explorations of race, gender, and social issues. Early Life and Education Giovanni spent her early years in Cincinnati, Ohio, before returning to Knoxville to live with her grandparents during her high school years. In 1960, she enrolled at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she became actively involved in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and edited the university’s literary magazine. She graduated with honors in 1967 with a B.A. in History.
