Remembering The Union Square Wreck-30 Years Later
from HubTalk Chronicles Podcast
Today is the 30th anniversary of the tragic 1991 Union Square Derailment Wreck that has left 5 people deceased and 161 people injured. The motorman in question was intoxicated while on duty operating a southbound (4) train. He overshot two stations in the Bronx and caused one of the worst accidents in NYCTA history. The disgraced, drunk operator was found not guilty of murder but was found guilty of five counts of second degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 5-15 years in prison and then sentenced for 1-7 years for assault of 26 of the injured passengers. He was released in April 2002, and was on parole until 2007. The operator got a dose of karma when he became the victim of a hit-and-run accident by a drunk driver in 2015. Plus, a tribute to the late singer Aaliyah. Please listen and enjoy.
