Repent for God's Sake

from St Mark Sermons · host St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church

There are certain things that even though we know are beneficial for us, that we don't do for ourselves. But if it is for the sake of someone we love, we are much more motivated, especially if it's someone that we love more than we love ourselves. While confession is "free" for us, it was not at all free for Christ. Perhaps, if we work on our repentance not just to "get into heaven" or to break an "controlling habit." and instead, we follow Christ’s example in John 17:19 "For their sakes I sanctify myself.", We would be much more proactive and motivated and successful in repenting and sanctifying ourselves, since we would be doing it for His sake, so as not to add more pain to Him on the Cross. Let us ask God to pour His healing oil (Kyrie-Ellison) over our wounds to rid us of our old selves.
