It’s a very simple but profound observation. Simply stated, that which we live among is invisible to us. This is especially true when it comes to self-defeating thinking and assumptions. We rarely think about our thinking but maybe we should. Could it be that the real reason we fail at new year’s resolutions is that we fail to address the bad thinking that led to the behavior in the first place? It’s really an attempt at self-punishment. Because if I treat others badly, they’ll treat me the same way – which is the way I feel I deserve to be treated. In other words, I set myself up to be punished for my wrongdoing. A.W. Tozer described this phenomenon as “the perpetual penance of regret.” Regret is the ruiner of relationships. Its toxicity will leak out and affect those who have nothing to do with it. But it doesn't have to be this way.
