Republicans' real agenda was never about legality —and it's a scam

It concedes the premise that immigrants are a problem to be managed, not people whose rights the state must presume.The Real PatternThis is the familiar American pattern of authoritarian politics: define a group as dangerous, turn punishment into procedure, then ask moderates to find common ground with the machinery of exclusion. The Republicans are the active force here, but Democratic inertia helps them by refusing to name the project clearly enough. If the goal is to defend immigration as a democratic good, then the system itself has to be torn out by the roots and rebuilt around human equality, not bureaucratic suspicion.
