Have you ever heard the phrase "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" before? Upon first hearing, it sounds like such a noble thought. You're strong; you're courageous; you're resourceful and smart. Only after the initial excitement wears off does one soon realize the absurdity of this statement. No one can actually pull oneself up by their own bootstraps.
