Dr Kate Dashper from the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management discusses if mentoring can be an effective tool for promoting greater gender equality in organisations. Based on a longitudinal study of a women’s mentoring programme, she argues that such initiatives can be best understood as paradoxical in that they can help empower individual women in their careers, but at the same time do little to challenge wider structures and practices that contribute to persistent inequality.
