Research into Male Therapists’ Experience in the Therapy Room, with Male Clients with Disordered Eating, with Maria Guiñazu

from The Eating Disorder Therapist · host HARRIET FREW

Today I have a returning guest to the podcast and I’m talking to Maria Guiñazu, a psychologist trained in Argentina and a qualified psychotherapist in the UK. She is based in Brighton. Maria’s approach intersects existential therapy and somatic psychology. She is passionate about looking at a wide variety of tools that might suit her clients towards growth, healing, transformation and embodied presence.  Maria’s work is focused on the relationship between body, emotions, thoughts and imagination. And for some clients, she uses creative writing, drawing or movement, as other tools to explore a world beyond verbal communication. Maria offers therapy in English and Spanish. At the moment, Maria is in her third year of her doctorate in Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology. Her doctorate research is looking at the lived experience of male therapists working with male clients with disordered eating. In the podcast today, we do a deep dive into Maria’s research work exploring some male therapists’ experience of working with male clients with disordered eating. It’s a fascinating topic, where Maria talks about her inspiration for the work; how the male-experience of eating disorders can be very different from that of the female one; creating safe spaces for males to open-up about disordered eating without shame and embarrassment; body objectification, the influence of philosophical thought and more. Maria is absolutely passionate about her research and I know that you will be inspired and intrigued by everything she has to share here. So much value in this episode. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.   To find out more about Maria:  Instagram: @maria.iggy Website: https://thetherapeuticspace.com/   Podcast episode with Jack Rose https://harrietfrew.podbean.com/e/gay-men-and-body-image-unrealistic-standards-steroids-porn-and-social-media-with-jack-rose/   This week's sponsors: Sabrina Magnan -  www.sabrinamagnan.com/bingechallenge WeShape - Katie Bramlett:   http://www.weshape.com/freedom   Harriet Frew's current offers: - Online 10 Steps to Intuitive Eating Course with Harriet Frew - 50% off with code FREEDOMISPOSSIBLE https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html Online Event - Inspiring Prevention of Eating Disorders and Body Image Issues https://www.eventbrite.com/e/inspiring-prevention-of-eating-disorders-and-body-image-issues-tickets-601388086957
