This is Gloria Avelos, Academic and Career Resource Advisor in the Center for Success. I would like to welcome you to our Career Talk series. In this episode, I will discuss some tips to have you stand out in the job search. The first tip I will go over in this episode is to do strategic research.
First it is recommended that you draft a list of 10 or so companies or organizations, but you can start small with a list of three to five of them. You're now probably wondering where you could find companies where you could potentially work at. If you're not certain of what industry to go in, I would recommend you approach finding companies of interest in this way. You want to work in a truly corporate environment?
You want to work at a nonprofit with an organization you have already involved with, or that works with the cause that you are particularly passionate about, since it may be smaller in scale? Startups can be similar in size to some nonprofits, but may function more like a corporate environment. Location is crucial to considering your job search as well. However, you may look deeper than that as you want to ensure that the company aligns with your own values and goals.
Take some time to look at the mission and vision pages on their websites and note key phrases and words that jump out to you. Do the job titles and or descriptions have elements of future rules that you wish to hold in the future? They're all points to have in mind while job searching. The next part is to reach out to alumni.
For example, you can try talking to your majors, department chair, or trusted professor to see if they know of any that work in a field or at a company of interest. Another route you can consider would be using LinkedIn's alumni tool. Lastly, you can find new connections through social media, whether it's through your peers or people that you may not know yet. This is a great way to foster new connections and obtain another perspective on the role of interest.
