Resilience and Redemption: Barbara Lewthwaite's Journey from Trauma to Triumph

from Unspoken Emotions · host Rachel Elimelech

In this inspiring episode, Rachel engages in a heartfelt conversation with Barbara Lewthwaite, whose journey of resilience and defiance against early trauma and societal norms is both profound and transformative. Barbara shares her experiences of surviving abuse, the emotional intelligence she developed at a young age, and her courageous decision to report her father, which led to significant personal and familial upheaval. Barbara emphasizes the importance of community, self-empowerment, and the power of love in overcoming life's challenges.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience Through Trauma: Early trauma can create feelings of invisibility and being unheard, but individuals can develop inner resilience and a strong sense of self-worth despite their circumstances. The Power of Community: Building supportive communities can empower individuals to express themselves, learn new skills, and transform their lives. Choice and Responsibility: Individuals have the power to choose how they respond to their circumstances. Recognizing that we are not defined by our past experiences allows for personal growth and the ability to create new narratives. Emotional Intelligence and Self-Compassion: Developing emotional intelligence and practicing self-compassion are crucial for healing from past traumas and moving forward in life. Love as a Guiding Principle: Choosing love over the need to be right can dissolve conflicts and foster deeper connections. Emphasizing love in communication can lead to resolution and understanding in relationships. BEST MOMENTS "Until recently, it's created a world where no matter what I do, I feel invisible and underheard. Even now, when I am listened to, I cry." "I had such a passion for being in nature. It was like my mother and father. I don't remember ever being nursed or cuddled or comforted." "You have always believed in the power of community... What led you to this work exactly and how did you see that transformation unfold in the people that you worked with?" "I see that just about everything in the world is a reliving of past lives... and then a context for love." "The choice is stark. My point of view is the only one. Yours is wrong. Or love." Empowered by Darkness Andrea Medina Hi, I’m Andrea Medina. Though I’m in my early 20s, the history of relational trauma in my family lineage coupled with my own father’s abuse and abandonment, has instilled in me a self-awareness and sensitivity to emotions from a young age. I was born in México and raised in Compton, a community where I didn’t have many mentors or influences that pointed me in the direction of emotional healing work. Still, I went on to publish The Energized Self: A Journey to Interconnected Healing, a book that is half memoir and half conversations with trauma survivors at the age of 22. This same year I began my public speaking journey and my master’s program to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. As I find myself rising to fulfill my soul’s calling today, I am still in the same location where conversations like the ones had in this podcast aren’t common. I’m also faced with a myriad of economic and social challenges that I know listeners will relate to. My goal is that Never Alone Infertility Morgan and Madison Never Alone is a podcast for women navigating infertility, loss, and everything in between. We’re two friends whose paths intertwined during our own walks through infertility, and we understand how isolating and overwhelming the process can be. From the uncertainty of IVF to the heartache of miscarriage and the patience required in moments of waiting, we’re here for you.Join us each week as we have real and raw conversations about the challenges and emotions of walking through infertility and loss – both from our own experiences and speaking with other women. We’re glad you’re here, and hope you feel seen, supported and most of all know that you’re never alone.
