Episode Description
Respectable Sins – Chapter 9 – “Discontentment” Based on Kevin DeYoung’s Just Do Something
Jerry Bridges begins the chapter with these words:
“Anxiety is a fearful uncertainty over the future, whether short-term or long-term. Frustration is usually the result of some immediate event that has blocked my plans or desires. Discontentment most often arises from ongoing and unchanging circumstances that we can do nothing about.”
Disclaimer: some discontentment is legitimate
- All of us, to some degree, should be discontent with our spiritual growth
- Prophetic discontentment with injustice and other evils in society (coupled with a desire for justice and positive change)
We will be addressing sinful discontentment – in Scripture, warnings about discontentment usually concern money
and possessions
- Examples: unfulfilling or low-paying job; singleness; inability to bear children; unhappy marriage; physical disability; continued poor health
- Despite the legitimacy of the cause of our discontentment, discontentment is still sin
What is the danger of discontentment to our souls and daily lives?
- Can easily lead to resentment or bitterness toward God or other people
Psalm 139:16 – “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
- Apply this verse to some of the list above Work through the life of Job as an example of how to deal with circumstances that usually lead to discontentment
- Job 1:21
Firm belief and trust in the sovereignty, wisdom, and goodness of God in all the circumstances of our lives
- HC LD 10
- Romans 8:28
