Restoring History One Headstone at a Time | Jacksonville News

Greg Gainey, the last in his family line tied to Taylor Cemetery in Baker County, Florida, is launching a heartfelt mission to restore nearly 1,500 historic headstones—starting with veterans’ markers. With deep personal roots in the cemetery, including his Civil War ancestor and grandfather who helped build caskets, Gainey is raising funds for a specialized cleaning solution to gently revive the stones without harsh scrubbing. Moved by community donations—even from strangers—he’s determined to honor the forgotten and preserve the stories etched in stone, with plans to expand his work across the county if he meets his goal.
