Rethinking The Crusades

from King's Banner Podcast Hosted by Justin Hart

You’ve probably heard the Crusades reduced to a single sentence: “Christianity’s darkest hour.” That slogan is easy to repeat and hard to defend once you lay the timeline on the table. We bring on Jared to rebuild the story from the ground up, starting with what the Crusades actually were and why the First Crusade (1095) didn’t come out of nowhere. We talk Crusades history in the context of centuries of Islamic expansion into formerly Christian lands, the pressure placed on pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem, and the turning points that forced the Byzantine Empire to beg for help. From the Battle of Manzikert (1071) to Emperor Alexios Komnenos’ plea, we walk through why Pope Urban II’s call at Clermont landed with such power and why “armed pilgrimage” wasn’t a money play for most crusaders. We also wrestle with just war theory, the moral difference between condemned wrongdoing and rewarded wrongdoing, and how chivalry, vows, and sacrifice shaped men who expected to die far from home. Along the way, we recommend resources for anyone tired of revisionist history and hungry for primary sources, including Raymond Ibrahim’s Sword and Scimitar, Defenders of the West, and Two Swords of Christ. We close by teasing the heroes and the timeline we didn’t get to, including Godfrey de Bouillon and the “two swords” idea of spiritual offense and physical defense.
