Rethinking: The Rapture Pt 2

Last time we took a look at how being "left behind" is misused from Matthew 24, the history of "the rapture", a proper futurist interpretation of 1 Thessalonians 4 and ended with "audience relevance".  So this is where we pick up.  What did Pauls message to the Thessalonians mean to them when they received this letter?  Why would God send a word of encouragement to them about the relief of their troubles if it were to come some 2,000 years later?  What was their hope and what did that mean to them, not us?  It's important to read the bible in this way to get a proper understanding of the context.  Sure, there is an application for us but it was not written to us but for us.  In this way, we can get a better understanding of what Paul was talking about and how the Thessalonians received the truths in this letter.  So we get two interpretations, one with first-century fulfillment and another that started then and continues today with all those who come to Christ through faith.
