Retro Warriors 511 - Top 10 Compilations

Ladies and gentlemen welcome to my two words episode 511. Whoo. The numbers are getting hard to say they're gonna be big. They're gigantic.

That's gonna be too many syllables soon You're just the issue. Yeah, it's the teens There's just so many I do want to take a quick moment to note that we always do our people who listen to the uncut We always do a brief silence before we start the proper show presumably make anything easier Sure, and this week before we started our silence. You made sure to get all your dad noises out I knew myself throughout the show. Yeah, because I take it before we record Yeah, I like mute and just drain.

Oh, yeah, I can spring As I can hear us as I'm joined by Bible human Chris Saturn well in this housekeeping We will be joined by our producer guy. He's here. He's back. He's back from the hockey He's got a break from the hockey play there in the playoffs right now Which is when they all all the teams go nice at the same time.

It's like a battle royale as I understand it It's really aggressively hit each other in the in the wing wing with the puck with the pucks Yeah, and the last one standing they win they win Stanley's Cup and so he's standing comes down and gives it to him So that's that's my understanding of the year in his right after drink the whole thing if they do they complete the challenge they win Yes, so it's combination Stanley Stanley's cup protects the wing wing dude Oh, wait guy we're on the proper show get out of here But stay stay tuned after the ending theme because guys gonna be on for his segment So he'll be here for him. We may not talk wing wings, then who knows we you know we can only hope Also a little worried this is our first show of the night and it's got an energy to it and I can't imagine what the second Show is gonna be like it's just gonna be strange. It'll either be absurd or will be asleep. Who knows?

Yeah, it could go either way I mean I've been on a little bit of a spending tear I've been I basically spent a chunk of money buying up all the shit that I'm worried about getting tariff to death right because a lot of You know smaller companies that I frequent are already pulling out of the US market pausing us sales Yeah, I'm already just increasing prices Yeah, and so part of that was getting all my sixth generation consoles all modded enough to snuff cuz these a lot of like little mod chips And different parts and adapter boards and stuff that just aren't produced very widely So they're like small small run electronics things. Yeah, so just like that But one thing I wanted to get was an up scaler. Okay, and I have the very first retro team the retro tink 2x Yeah, and I bought it at the time because it did composite and s video I think it also does a component but I wanted it for composin in this video It's like a hundred dollars at the time and it's been a decent scaler. It's like hey I need to get composite 480 onto a 4k TV and it does that fine Yeah, but because I've been getting my ps2 up to snow if I started to learn That the interlacing on ps2 is notoriously difficult to upscale Without it looking all wiggly right because most ps2 games output an interlace signal.

Yeah, and so it's it's been a bit of an issue and the ps2 HDMI mod is as expensive as a retro tink 5x So it's not like $300 yes, the the HDMI ps2 mod is like 280 some dollars and you got to pay some new install fucking thing yeah because I can't I'm not soldering We're in ribbing cables now. We're too young for that. Yeah We can barely put on pants on days and so I just don't a lot of times And so I bought a retro tink 5x for people that don't know this is put up I make my cheese in in the long running line of retro tinks It is the next one down from the highest in which is the retro tink 4k which is $750 Which is nuts yeah, and the reason we're for the 5x instead of you know an OSSC or an OSSC Pro or the other one That you got to build I forget what it's even called because there's a few different scalers out there on the market right now Is because the tink 5x Very much markets itself as like plug and play like you just you just plug your systems in and you go and it Just is just gonna kind of look pretty good And if you want to get you can but it's just gonna kind of work Yeah, and it very much lives up to that claim so far in my very limited experience with it One it uses an FPGA powered motion adaptive interlacing technology Yeah, which is different than traditional bob and weave interlacing and this sounds like the most like pixel peeping shit ever But if you look at them next to each other it looks a lot better If you've ever tried to upscale an interlaced signal what happens is it has to kind of alternate the lines that it's showing You because it's interlaced. Yeah, so it makes the picture looks like it's look like it's kind of subtly jumping up and down Right and I've heard that some people don't even notice it other people like me It's really annoying and staring out it too long kind of gives me a headache It's just it's just like feels like my eyes are vibrating the whole time And it it so that's using traditional bob and weave interlace and also gives you some artifacts and stuff depending on how motion is done On the screen but the motion adaptive interlace of the 5x is the big selling point one It is you know kind of it's known in the community for making ps2 look really really good I'm gonna get my ps2 on component cables and And it doesn't look with any of the 1080i games.

I have not tried a 1080i game, but it does have full 1080i support So it's nice so theoretically should look good and still use this motion adaptive interlacing so it should look just as good there Nice But I'm mostly using it for ps2. I can't need to get around to testing my 8 and 16 bit stuff on it I'm sure that's gonna look great because already looks great on my old retro team Those are just less challenging systems to upscale sure But it also has tons of options for playing around stuff So I ended up my wife got a big bag of the hstapes So my daughter's been watching tapes and we have a little tiny CRT like 13 inch with a VCR built-in and I thought to myself I wonder how well it up scales VHS tapes. Yeah, and the answer is Excellently nice and granted in this needs to be said I see it said retro RGB YouTube channel says all the time I've seen it all over the place and it is that this stuff isn't working miracles a composite signal It's still gonna look like a composite signal, right? It's just gonna look like the best version of that composite signal that you're gonna get which is still way way way way below Hiring digital signals, right?

But it's still way above kind of what your TV is just gonna natively do like my TV if you feed it for ADP It's about a 50-50 shot that's even gonna show it If it does it might look good it might not it might drop out and God forbid the the Resolution change at all and that's the other thing is that the ting 5x perfectly handles resolution changes There's no dropout whatsoever. It just clicks immediately over so we can actually play crun across on time. Oh, it can yes So it's got instant instant change over tons of options watching the I was watching Akira I have the widescreen VHS and it has manual cropping So I went in there and I cropped the widescreen VHS because the blacks on VHS are gray because they're not right truly black because it's old signal Yeah, but I cropped it down to the size of the letterbox. Yeah, so my black bar is on the top and bottom because it's a you know It's a letterbox widescreen.

Yeah, we're perfectly black on my TV because the ting cropped them out down to the image It's like I know it's weird I'm kind of more excited to watch me just takes on this thing like today I watch them up at treasure island in robo cop in a cure all under Hs and from I watch Fragment Rocket. Oh on the short list. I got some frag or rock tapes It uses it's got a bunch of different scan line filters with a bunch of different options to kind of shift around in there It's just it's got so much. I don't know what 90% of stuff is yeah But basically if you want to do it if it's a tweak you want to do it's there and you can do it nice And it's really nice.

I was playing Tekken 5 Which was changing resolutions because it was switching to it has the PS1 games in there and stuff and it changes over just fine Everything looks great And again if you just want to like plug a thing in and say component show my video it'll do it and it'll look awesome Yeah, and this is gonna sound really weird one of the big features for me is it's got a power button Which sounds strange. Yeah, but I because I have so many HDMI hubs hooked up to my TV I rely on the auto switching yeah, and something that's always out putting a signal will keep grabbing the signal from other devices What the frame I sort of does because I've got an 8-4 HDMI switch and I got the same one way It stays on and it grabs the signal exactly anytime any of my devices reboot it switches over to the frame I sir and I have to manually change it back to the input I'm trying to use yeah So this because it's got a power button I can turn it off and all my auto switching works fine Then when I use it I'd rather mode it turn back on it's really really nice. It's got component it supports composite S video and scarred nice It's just it's a really nice. Is it only support your own scar does it support JP scarred or both or I don't know I don't have any scarred devices so it's probably not something I'll ever touch I would suspect that it supports the maximum amount that is Physically capable of the connector on it because that's just kind of how my cheese stuff tends to work I believe my framemeister only does Japan scarred if I remember right and so I had to make sure that all the scarred cables I got were Japan style and the adapter I have to plug my scarred into that PBM that I got from you is also Japan specific Yeah, now when I was watching reviews of it Americans were plugging in American systems with scarred cables So I'm guessing right where it supports non Japan scarred, but I well there is no American scarred Yeah, well whatever the non-Japanese version of start is well I'm using Japan scarred on my US systems.

Oh, I don't know as has become very evident in this I don't know shit about scarred. I never got in this I always did component on everything because right I understand I do know some people have complaints because the scarred connector goes the wrong way So if you have an angled scarred cable, you have to like kind of bend it backward, which is sort of weird That's weird, but apparently it was because of how the board was put together. There was no No, you can flip it got you but it's it's overall So I'm like I know just enough about video signals to get myself in trouble and know what I want to tweak Yeah, not enough to know how to do any of it right and with that level of competency in mind The rest of the team has been fantastic I can just turn shit on and it just auto detects and works and it's awesome and on the rare occasion I'm like yeah I want to see if I can cut down the the visual noise of the letterbox of a wide-screen VHS that I've stretched to 69 and scaled up to 1080p Yeah, I can do weird shit like that. I'm gonna save it as a profile So the next time I watch a wide-screen VHS.

I can just click it over right it does it Yeah, my first ever HD TV which was a Samsung DLP projector It had a mode that lets you manually zoom a standard definition signal to whatever size you wanted so that I can crop out the letterboxing All my letterbox of VHS tapes and I'm so excited I was so excited. What's cool about it is it's got regular cropping syncrop freely on any side But I guess what I'm talking about is it's not technically a crop I mean it is because it's keeping the horizontal width. It's just making the black part black by cutting it out of the signal entirely Right. I don't know it's hard to explain My point is robo-cop and VHS looks the way I remember robo-cop and VHS looking which is great and PS2 looks great and the interlacing is great I'm very impressed with the device.

It feels a little silly to buy a $300 scalar just for PS2 and VHS Right, but but I have other devices and inevitably I'm gonna want to pull out something Yeah, and it will kind of natively work with that now my gamecube and my Xbox about HDMI modded So I don't need it for those but you could use it for anything older plus you can play your PS1 games on PS2 and Good on there. Yeah, totally. So I'm I'm I've been very impressed with it It's it's the first high-end scalar. I've ever bought the only other scalar had before this was the retro tink 2x Yeah, which did what it said on the tin which was just it doubles the line doubles is kind of what it did It also didn't support 4DP.

It was literally just like we will line double your signal so that it will output onto a Because most last means won't take a 4D. I say right taking their only signal at all the weirds And so it was just like hey if you have a TV that won't take an early signal Which most mine then it will line double it so that it won't look okay Yeah, I've yet to encounter a TV that won't take the standard 4D. I signal for my Wii That's weird. I wonder if it's like a different kind of signal I don't know the Wii is another system I want to hook up to it because it will output 240p over component right and then I can properly scale 240p via component and play any Yes games, I guess I don't know but it's on my list I need to go there you go.

Yeah, there you go. So that's I've been very much enjoying it. It makes PS2 look Again, I feel like it bears mentioning a scaler is not the same as like an HDMI mod It's not gonna be digital signal clarity But it's gonna look the way that the way I describe it is it looks the way I remember it looking Yeah, if that makes sense yeah, and an analog signal can honestly have its charm over a digital signal because absolutely There are some games that look a little too perfect when you just look at the clean polygons upscaled to whatever Yeah, when clearly they were designed like I thought that that mean that everybody uses a final fancy aid of you're the most attractive guy here It's like yeah, super low-res Looking when you add a shitload of CRT blur on there. He doesn't look as bad You know, it's it's also interesting that like I've been running my mod at Xbox with you know The mod of dashboard everything is fully HDMI mod modded it I'll put a true 720p digital signal and you don't realize the graphical disparity that existed between PS2 and Xbox until you're doing that Yeah, like PS2 games upscale now put the digital signal you start to see the cracks Yeah, I know because I got my first HD TV during that era I had gotten component cables for all three current consoles I had my game cube PS2 and Xbox all plugged in component and let me tell you I could see how much worse the ps2 was Even over analog component cables for all three systems I've been doing PS2 emulation and upscaling that and that's you know true digital It's it's emulation, but it's it's the way the games would look in a you know digital signal Yeah, it looks a lot of times.

It just looks bad I think a lot of the ps2 sort of relied on being you know a little bit of gasoline on the lens Yeah, so I do think of the three six-gen systems It probably benefits the most like even the game cube is weirdly ahead of its time I was having like actual digital video out on the earlier models anyway, right, which the ps2 did not have and Just just kind of crazy game cube over component look just great back then it didn't it really did it really did It looks better than composite ps2 sure. Yeah, but it's just not outstanding I mean you start to go into the menu and tell it to to output to switch over You know, but it's um it's been good I'm very excited to hook up other systems to it I've had a lot of stuff going on so I don't have a chance to but my next endeavor is going to be we and 240p output The OE one thing I'm gonna go one thing that I really appreciated that generation about the original Xbox despite the fact that it didn't have My favorite library of the three systems is that it just automatically picked whatever the best possible video mode a game could output was Yes, whereas we're the weird button right even on game cube you'd have to hold B when you turn on the game to even get the option for Progressives some games would notice it right some of them would but not too many and then on on ps2 It was usually triangle and cross I think And then some games it was different combinations for which video output you wanted so if you want to tell you I was like Trying one square and if you wanted for ADP was trying one X and that's just such a giant pain in the ass it is So I also hooked up my 240p CRT Raspberry Pi running retro pi to it up scaled that and watched a bunch of old anime on For whatever reason I'm a want to watch TV on this thing instead of scale video games, but it did really good with that It was a Raspberry Pi output via the headphone jack to composite. Yeah, which again not gonna work any miracles But it's pretty a pretty clean composite signal all things considered so nice I was running Cody and watching City Hunter of all things. Okay, but yeah, so anyway, Richard In fact, it's really good scaler if you're if you've been kind of like me really like yeah, that was a sea looks cool And it's kind of affordable, but also like it's really like DIY You really gotta figure out all your settings for everything the the retro ting 5x is good Just like just plug the shit in and then later if you feel like it get the remote and play around the settings and see what happens But if not, it's gonna look good.

It's not worried about it. So I'm pretty happy with it Nice, you know, but that is that that is the final Pranap tent pole in my specifically my sixth generation consoles. I'm not calling them done. I've got a ps2.

It's got a hard drive in it It's running psb dn. It's it's my game cube is modded with a s d2 and it's running You know the Swiss and I've got my fully modded out Xbox with a terabyte hard drive. They're all out of it with games They're all out putting good video six generation is done. It's all set everything works.

I got all games Yeah, it's complete. That's why until somebody releases a nice new controller mod for it You know, I got to install I got a little bit after I got wireless controllers for all of them Well, not my game cube. I'm still on a way for but It's because the way it was already correct true true. Although technically the dreamcast is sixth-gen I don't have a lot of that dreamcast.

I'm gonna go see think about sandwich So somebody in our chat had mentioned blueprints which I heard nothing at all about going into it. Yes Bob in our chat. Yeah, so excited and then got so disappointed Yeah, we actually played a big day and I was like once I came past I'll give it a shot And so I'm trying it and then when I go back to the chat after playing it for a little bit I just see everybody like ripping on it and there. Yeah, you know, just everybody's like fart sniffing a word-bait game And I'm just in here silently enjoying the game Clear even from the first trailer it very much looks like a fart sniffing award.

Oh, it is. Yeah, just gonna throw that out That's not good. Totally. Totally.

It is very much a great vibe. Yeah, this is art and you're like it's a game Let's play it and have fun, but the gameplay though is very fun I am really enjoying that actually between steam and my Xbox. I'm like 60 hours in now. Oh, wow I've been playing a lot of it is just that I it's a thing that I can play at work because I can just stop at any point When I walk away.

Yeah, um, it's similar to if you played the board game betrayal at House on the Hill I own it and Andrew owns it. I've never played. I know I also own it We can all own it together and I also not open my copy But I have played it on somebody else's I bought it because it was on sale for $9 and I was like if it's even good once for $9 and I opened it punched it out organized it made it look all nice and stuffed in the box I can see only show it's just fucking sitting there. It actually is a lot of fun I played it with some friends on their copy and I bought a copy so that I would have a copy and have clearly never Needed to use it since then because no one has been interested in playing it since then and even if somebody was interested We would use your copy or Andrews copy because you guys are the game people Anyway, it is very similar to that in that you draw room tiles and then place them to build out a house sure And it is I guess technically rogue like in that you are you know, it is a different experience every run of it right and I the way that I would describe it is it's like if mist was a video game Oh If you can imagine that I know that's hard to strategically you said that to piss off the maximum amount of mist fans look I can feel every mist fan that is the show be like oh It's saying a played mist.

It's not a game. It's a PowerPoint presentation This is a video game So it's you know, it's you do these separate runs you build out your mansion through the tile cards And each tile has a different little thing that's got either you'll get some Expendables that you have to use it feels very board gamey and that you got all these different tokens You have to expend to do all the different things you got keys and you got gems and you got Steps which is your stamina and then there's a another thing that's suddenly gone from my mind But also it feels very similar to things like tunic or animal well or outer wilds and that after you finish what is Presented to you as your objective you suddenly realize there's a shitload more depth afterwards Yeah, and that you've barely scratched the surface and that if you just keep going at it There's there's a lot more game here and what you thought was the whole game was really just kind of a tutorial or an introduction to get you into the actual game That was pretty clear by the trailer I watched they're like oh complete blueprints, but is there more Over and I was like oh, I guess there's more yeah, it's it's one of those things where it's very much a puzzle game It's not don't expect any kind of actual action or anything But it's one of those games where you'll realize you know on your hundredth run through that this thing that you've walked past a hundred times Wasn't just a puzzle piece and that you should have been paying attention to it this whole time. There are some permanent upgrades But really you're gonna be just laying out your mansion over and over again and sure figuring out things It's fun. I'm enjoying it.

I recommend it to anyone who enjoys puzzle games and is looking for something kind of Board looking at this is my complete outsider. I've not played the game I watched the trailer and I was like oh so it's like if slay the spy or wanted a win an award at the game awards I hated combat like that was my immediate It feels more board gamey than it does card. Yeah, yeah watching the game because the trailer is like a guy in a warehouse talking About the game Probably is but then you watch actual gameplay. You're like oh, it's like a puzzle e-board game kind of thing Yeah, okay, I want you to say that just say that right.

Yeah, I don't watch the trailer I can't speak to how much they're huffing their own parts in the trailer. It's probably a lot because the game is a trailer The game is a media use specifically because you're sensitive to it. You be like the fuck yeah The game does definitely come across as huffing its own parts during any of its cinematics or its cutscenes Which now I just skip them all because they're very part-huffy But but there is some story to it and I'm trying to figure out the story It's one of those where it's so proud of its story that it doesn't want you to hear it all at once and you have to go hunt it down And I don't care about that at all But I am trying to figure out what the story is because there's got to be one in here somewhere Hopefully it's not those cutscenes because they're really boring So I have shocking news if there was gonna be a story probably in the cutscenes. I don't know several the cutscenes are silent Why is that a real scene?

I don't know we call that a slideshow I have noticed a very very bad bug that I tried to report to them and their website didn't take my report which is there is a Hidden area that you have to go to great lengths to unlock and it has a hidden traversal method that you can find in the traversal method is entirely a little cutscene that plays and then it just gets you Over to another area that you could have unlocked in a different way But if you happen to hit your map button right as the cutscene starts whole game crashes It is unrecoverable. You have to start a new run and hope that you can get back to that point So that's just don't don't open your map when you're in a little cutscene thing That's as much as I can say without spoiling every new Let's do the news. Okay, 50% of all PC gaming revenue in 2024 came from microtransactions It's disappointing but not as surprising as I want it to be. Yeah, I can't say I'm shocked Honestly, I wonder I wonder if Roblox and Fortnite were considered their own separate platform and not included in the umbrella of an air quotes PC gaming How much that percentage would drop also how much of Fortnite and Roblox is revenue is coming from PC?

I mean, those are also one mobile. They're on console. They're on whatever true I think they're just already so massive that any platform. They're on they're gonna eat up a large chunk of Yeah, I would I would just be interested all that to be fair I don't know if it even includes Roblox is it's a weird art chemistry like it's a weird fucking thing, right?

But I wonder if the top two games that like it's just the top couple of like free to play games that we're like we really consider those were Yanked out how much that percentage would drive either way only You guys are shocked by that. Yeah, it is Next up the switch to game controller will not be compatible with switch slash switch to games said Nintendo But then they clarified that it may but doesn't have all the buttons needed for full functionality So who who knows it could it's gonna work some a little sometimes they finally released a switch controller with analog but our analog triggers He just can't use them for switch games. I I'm trying not to bitch about the switch to too much because I don't want to be the negative Nancy in the room I didn't buy one why Bob one but it's for my brother. He's gonna pay me back because he didn't get a pre-order.

Yeah The miscommunication over the switch to has been so bad. Oh, well get that is it just is it just all right? Okay, I'll wait then I'll wait then I'll wait I've got it. I ended up pushing it to the next episode There's a whole music article about that so we'll get to that we'll talk more about it But I will say I'm shocked at how bad it has been yeah, it's been it feels intentionally bad it does Following the release of the Minecraft movie Google search trends show that minecraft led porn hub as the top Google search for the first time In five years.

I want to say this I kind of talks of shit about the Minecraft movie No, it's coming out. Yeah, it has annihilated expectations. Yeah, yeah I mean it has show up and just exploded everyone's ex sales expectations out of water This is as far as I know the biggest movie of the year so far it has already they've already greenlit a dozen other Video game movies in the same kind of you know category as minecraft so I think I'm happy about it I think what I said on the show was I'm glad a new generation gets to experience the disappointment And turns out fucking love it and it's not that at all so you know, you know I got my face you've heard about the warnings that theaters have been making about it, right? No, I've heard about kids freaking out at the chicken jockey part Yeah, that's apparently it because they're all throwing popcorn at that scene and so theaters like you were not allowed to throw popcorn Or you will be removed from the theater because there's apparently been a giant mess and it's been damaging screens and and it's a whole problem Okay, if popcorn hitting your screen damages it, maybe you shouldn't run a movie theater So this is some some insider information I learned when I did rocky horse several years Those screens suck all of the screens and all the movie theaters suck and the slightest content will damage them Really it is oil from the popcorn will definitely damage them We had to have big because if you've never been to rocky horror live things get thrown a lot toast Betty and rice and all kinds of shit gets thrown throughout the theater toilet paper is my favorite You just teepee the entire theater But we had to make giant loud disclaimers the start of the movie do not throw it towards the screen No matter what if you were in the first third of the theater only throw backwards if you were in the back of the theater Make sure you are not like fucking football manning it all the way to the screen You cannot hit the screen hit aim squarely for this asshole in the front row.

That's the person you want to hit Do not hit the never I would have never guessed that oh yeah, it was bad like if anything hit the screen the theater manager was in there Like ten minutes after the movie was over like what the fuck did you people do to my screen? I'm gonna have to pay $900 to fix this one inch one issue Sony is raising the price of the PS5 and the PS5 disk drive in Europe Australia and New Zealand and PlayStation Plus is also experiencing another Price increase in multiple countries. Yeah weirdly the United States is exempted which is a lot of current socio-political Climate is odd, but yeah, give it time. That kind of makes me wonder if they're making up for the situation here by raising it elsewhere In smaller markets that they think would get less upset it appears that this price increase was planned before the current Issue so maybe we're gonna get our own price increase.

I think we're gonna get ours later Although I say smaller markets. I don't know how much smaller the European market is yeah, you know, you know You're a Australian New Zealand are pretty big markets. Yeah, I mean I just in my head I imagine Australia New Zealand are probably smaller marks in the US, but Europe is probably pretty equivaling Yeah, just as far as PS5 sales. Yeah, and PS the US is Sony's biggest market by far And I think maybe they're trying to hold back a little bit just to not piss the US market off because that's their bread and butter right now So we'll see we'll see if we I assume we're gonna get something about this eventually.

Oh, yeah, yeah, it's coming Japanese courts have sentenced a seller of modded switch consoles to two years in jail and a $3,500 fine Japan both legally and Seemingly culturally is very not okay with you fucking modifying things. Yeah, it's very strange Not only is it do they have weird laws about modifying electronics and stuff, but they have strange reactions to like ROM hacks and stuff Yep, yep, experienced from time to time. Yeah, and that could be anecdotal, but it's you know, it's one of those things So this is not fun. Yeah, also a Cheat devices were never very popular there all yeah, yeah, so it's I don't know because everybody should enjoy cheating.

So here we are in the 500s to do that Yeah, in Saturn has to go first on all of these because I copied his homework I was very hard at work on the next week's episode Yeah, and so I ended up copying some of his homework second do quite as much research on this as I wanted So some of it was from memory as far as initial thoughts I wrote I like games, but I also like money Compilations let me get games for not many money Compilations good. But based on recent events.

We just this is true I am watching VHS tapes over 300 dollars It's the only way to watch RoboCop and treasure island Saturn don't you know I was flipping through local TV channels It like for in the morning this morning and like you do and one of the TV channels was airing police Academy the animated series And Robocop the animated series. Oh, oh, oh the the meat TV tunes. Yeah, like 80 tunes on the off hours It's great.

They play some shit. They play a lot of the police Academy cartoon. They play cartoons I didn't even know existed like the mask cartoony. Oh, yeah, I remember that I had no idea that even existed Which is different than the cartoon mask, right?

Right, which is frustrating because during the day. It's just like Flintstones and Jetsons and top cat right I'm not fucking old enough for this shit play the play that shitty 80s cartoon I saw their playing Beetlejuice and I flipped over the channel and that was just a commercial for McGilligarilla I was like why are you ever time McGilligarilla when you have this other good shit? I feel like we have to start with the Namco Museum because it's kind of the crown of Compilations sure and and also there are enough Namco museums at this point that they could release a Namco Museum Museum That is just a collection of Namco Museums Wasn't the PS1 Namco Museums like five releases six there was six And each one had one of the letters of Namco on its cover and then the sixth or release just had the registered trademark symbol Can I just say that if you can't fit all of your Namco ROMs on one CD? Maybe you're doing it wrong. I'm just throwing it out there. Also, keep in mind This is the late nineties.

This is the PS1 era They couldn't just grab maim and put it on a disc because maim was still in active development and not yet ported to anything that could even theoretically Work on a PS1 so they were having to individually write emulators for each one of these arcade ROMs So I give them credit for having to split it across all those different discs. Yeah But anyway, Namco Museum they kind of started the trend of these big comprehensive arcade compilations there had been Complications before that but this was kind of the first one that really broke the mold that well that made them all that we all use now Yeah, but specifically I'm going to be speaking about the two different NAMCO museums that released on the sixth gen consoles Because I feel like these were peak NAMCO museum Though I really like the the six PS1 NAMCO museums that all had different letters on those are cool I like the release strategy but these I think had the better games the first of the two which was my favorite Which I think is the one that you chose as well. Yeah, this is also my first pick Yeah, this one was just called NAMCO Museum The compilation was developed by mass media for NAMCO and released on PS2 Xbox and GameCube between 2002 and included the original arcade versions of Pac-Man Miss Pac-Man Galgagalaxian pole position big dog pack attack Pac-Mania and pole position to but more importantly it had Pac-Man arrangement Galgagal arrangement and Dig Dug arrangement which up to this point had never seen a home release and they are all the best versions of those three games Oh, yeah, these these these these Like for these are why I had this as my first pick and I couldn't pick anything else because they're so good like it's cool to have Pac-Man and Miss Pac-Man Galgag but we've got those everywhere else. Especially by the PS2 Xbox GameCube Like we had those in lots of other places.

Really? We had them on the PS1 NAMCO Museum and then whatever their original releases were I mean we had them on main by then. Yeah, we had we had main going by then But it was still a pain in the ass to get main to work back. You could play Miss Pac-Man on the Ojibakot color Yeah, that's everywhere, but those were not the original arcade versions But I like because I'm younger I was born in 1988 I don't have nostalgia for the these classic arcade games and I'll be honest.

I don't like Pac-Man. How dare you? It's fine like I'll play a level or two, but then I'm like, okay, I'm fucking done. Boring Miss Pac-Man the good one She's just the same game.

She just had a bow It's different mazes. Oh, so what? The first place That's like saying this highlights for kids is better than that highlights for kids because it's different Look my point is this the arrangement titles make this for me. They're wonderful range reputations of these games They're absolutely worth playing.

I get a lot of enjoyment playing Pac-Man arrangement Yeah, Galaga arrangement. I do struggle if I prefer Galaga arrangement more than like Galaga 88 I like that your notes say Gaga 88. Yeah, that was a type of Baby-based name Like that's just they just replaced the the boss Galaga's with Lady Gaga, right? arrangement is kind of the only one that like it's not the most exciting of the arrangements included in this collection but only because There are such great versions of Galaga.

Galaga arrangement is still awesome. I kind of struggle between it and 88 though I'm not sure which one I like more but they're both really really good. Oh, yeah, um This one is big, also good. I'm not a diggug fan.

I like the arrangement. I won't even play the original arcade game The arrangement like is this fun, but the reason I'm like now fuck this shit. I'm like, I'm like, dude get out It's fun getting to feel like a the young person who doesn't appreciate the classics on the show because they're so old lately This what is weird to me is they're missing two arrangements. There's a ZDS and a Mavius arrangement that are missing from this I was very sad about it at the time.

Mavius is one of my favorites I think there is a I think the DS Namco Museum has Mavius arrangement on it. Yeah, but I Was just pointed by it at the time I remember in the late 90s going to an arcade and seeing one of the machines that had the the the Namco arrangements on it and if I remember right it was diggugging Mappy on one machine or something like that and And I was just like blown away I was like it's it's diggug but it looks like a super Nintendo game and and just like I just poured quarters into it And then I was disappointed that there was no way to play it at home until The the really so I ended up getting an eventually on GameCube and was just very excited by it to be able to play I'm home and very upset that Mappy wasn't there because I love Mappy Yeah, weirdly enough I do have a lot of nostalgia for pole position because my grandma's lunch my mom and I was a kid had a sit down pole position machine So I do get enjoyment of the Namco Museum games. That's the one I typically skip I Figured as much I tell us about the second one of these yeah, so I'm this first one Yeah, a couple years later They released a second Namco Museum on the same consoles as the Namco Museum 50th anniversary This one was handled by digital clips and it was released no five and included some of the same game So you have Pac-Man, Miss Pac-Man, Galgug, Galaxian diggug, pole position to pull position to but then you also have rolling thunder Rally X, Bosconian, Dragon Spirit, Sky Kids, EBS, Mappy, Pac-Manian, Galgade, 8 so no arrangements No arrangements, but it does have a different collection of games Someone which hadn't yet been released on one of the other Namco museums So it was a few more games a lot more of the retro style games you miss out on the arrangements But you get a broader variety. Yeah, and also Galgade, 88 It's weird that they didn't do ZDS and Mappy arrangement because ZDS and Mappy are in this collection Exactly, so but having the two of them because I ended up picking up both up on GameCube eventually I had been looking for him for Xbox and just couldn't find him at that time But the GameCube versions having them as a companion to one another feels like a great collection of classic Namco right there Oh, yeah, that's a load of Namco.

Oh yeah, two discs. Yeah, definitely worth having if you still have that era of console Yeah, so what's your second pick and I promise I didn't copy your homework on this certainly not but in a different way I'm a man anniversary collection. Yes. I have this had this still have it.

So this was a version though. Yes No, that's unfortunate This was a developed by an atomic planet released by Capcom on the PS2 and GameCube and 04 Xbox and 05 Xbox Actually all three versions exclusive to North America never released anywhere else I know this because I had a friend who lived in the Netherlands at time and he desperately wanted this and I was like Well, I will get it for you if you get me a GameCube game And so I sent him a man anniversary collection. He sent me doshin the giant And that's what I learned culture exchange, right? That's when the time that I learned how expensive customs are because yeah, yeah, because the game on game He was $20.

I'm like this is gonna be cheap. I'm just gonna send him this $20 game cube game Then I get to the post office and I like it's gonna be an extra $18 in customs But it's it includes the PS1 conversions of the first six rock man games Which were released in Japan as rock man complete works as well as the Super NES Mega Man 7 and the PS1 version of Mega Man 8 I've always been a little sad. I didn't have the Saturn version of Mega Man 8 instead, but it's all right I'll accept the PS1 version It was neat to have the PS1 games of the first six Mega Man in English This is the only way you can get those six in English It also has the two arcade games It was the first time that the two Mega Man the power battle arcade games were released for home release ever And the PS2 version includes the first episode of the Ruby Spears TV show And the GameCube and Xbox versions instead have a episode of G4's icons about Mega Man, which is neat If you've never watched G4's icons, it was basically like a any biography for video game nerds. I'd rather have the Ruby Spears cartoon I don't know that I would I actually have the PS2 and GameCube versions this so I can watch both I copied your homework, but I picked Mega Man Legacy collections This is plural.

Yeah, because there's a load of them now These are the other four of them. So this is a series of compilations There's more than four because each one was split into two right, but they were download codes a lot of time which Right, but they're largely in four games Yeah, Mega Man Legacy collection one and two which was split but then later I think included all in one So they've released all of them as an all-in-one, but even the all-in-one was split into two SKUs. Really? Yeah Well, you got to buy the all-in-one you get two downloads or it's split there Legacy collection one two this is only one of these that was done by digital eclipse It's just really good reference quality versions of Mega Man's one through ten with a lot of behind-the-scenes art and stuff Yeah, and all of these include some amount of like art galleries or soundtrack modes and I think these the first a few games include Boss rush modes and stuff like that They're there.

I don't know this very first one the Mega Man like six collection one too It's almost kind of boring because it's very much just like reference quality versions of the Mega Man's yeah I was almost sterile especially compared to anniversary collection It does I just don't like Mega Man six seven or eight and I love nine and ten So I will pick this over anniversary every day of the week because it's got two more games that I really enjoy I like nine and ten but I was so disappointed that they reverted graphically Yeah, I wouldn't I wanted a little bit of a version I maybe didn't want all the way back to any else where they went But also they took away a lot of the abilities that were in three through eight I just I'm kind of okay with it. I like my Mega Man's real simple Mega Man X like you see collection one and two came out there were some changes the X5 Mavericks were being renamed to not being named After Guns N' Roses characters how dare x6 got Japanese voices added opening themes of x6 and seven were replaced for copyright reasons but other than that largely just a Really good collection of the the Mega Man X series except for they excluded Mega Man X string one and two This is true and it's unfortunate because those are surprisingly fun. Yeah, they're neat Mega Man Zero slash the X collection. This is basically everything that was in the Mega Man Zero collection on DS But with the ZX stuff added and all the stuff from the S version there It has checkpoints as a casual mode.

There's a link mode in ZX to approximate The connectivity options that were available that are not available on you know like a switch or an Xbox whatever The newest one is Mega Man Battle Network legacy collection which includes both versions of games were applicable So the battle network games that were released Pokemon style It has them both Includes a bunch of extra stuff like bok-tai crossover events a way to get the e-reader content in the game It has online chip trading which is nuts right like you can trade chips online with people Which is just really cool that they added that like just overall these four games one they're always on sale. Yeah and Two they basically encompass almost all of Mega Man. Yeah, you know, you don't got soccer You don't have power battles you're missing the extremes. There's no legends the two PSP games the two PSP games But other than that it's like a battle chase like 40 Mega Man games Yeah, it's a ludicrous amount of content and these go on sale for really cheap all the time I think you could pick all four of these up for less than a hundred dollars like right now Yeah, it's a decodials and if you're a steam user they are almost always on sale there specifically I'm a little disappointed that some of them are digital download codes which sucks at first preservation But just overall the ability to have this much classic Mega Man on your platform modern platform of choice Yeah is nuts and they're all very high quality.

They're all very well done and anywhere that they could include extra content They really seem to have I would say the very first collections Mega Man legacy collection one and two which is one for ten We're probably the lightest content wise everything else seems jam-packed with new shit And because of that light content is why I choose in versus collection over the legacy collection as good as the legacy collections are Which they are they're all of them are good. I just felt like they were missing something from anniversary collection They were there was some charm and every selection of that cute menu where it's a man running through doors like there was some charm There was some charm also there was all the bonus stuff from the PS one Collection which is missing from like a collection tell it just it felt well side that they pulled some back when they went to like in in the Preference of purity they pulled back some extra stuff It makes me wonder if that's like digital eclipse got taken off because they're kind of known for like dry but sort of museum Quality level preservation and I wonder if I was like now we want more of a kitchen sink approach because all the other collections are very kitchen sink E yeah in the very first one's just kind of like here's 10 Mega Man games cool Well, we got a little Intended puzzle collection. Oh, yeah, that's a lot of Nintendo puzzle collection So this was a developed by intelligence systems for the game cube back in a three and they had originally said that it was gonna Come out everywhere in the world and then it didn't I was very very upset Yeah, I was so upset I was working at EB at the time and they had sent us a little promo Cards that we could put on our countertop It would show all the upcoming game cube in GBA games at the time And it was just a little flip book like a kind of like a roll it X that you just flew through and see all the different games and one of them was in a public collection and not only did it Have an internal public collection, but they called it paneled upon on the English text on there I was like holy shit We're finally gonna get an original panel upon over here in the US I am so excited right now and then not in the cancel date and I was very very upset so I imported it because I had to That was the first import game you game I had I had bought the Date hell freeloader for it, which was a $20.00. This that let you play in four games on your game cube And it's so it's got the n64 port of dr.

Mario which had never been released in Japan It's got brand-new ports of Yoshi's cookie and paneled upon though the panel upon on there is very heavily based on Pokemon puzzle Eeg which also was not released in Japan So it's it's three puzzle games to which effectively re-releases of n64 puzzle games But they're just so good and paneled upon especially it's very very good on there I would have bought it even if it was just that because it's such a good version of panel upon it has all new remixed music that is Similar to but not the same as the super-nosed paneled upon music. It's got a new story mode and everything. It's great Also dr. Mario and Yoshi's cookie are there for some reason also.

It's still available complete for like $30 That's worth it. Absolutely like it's if you have a way to play Japanese game you game. Yeah, yeah, I definitely do it Maybe got one of those cool spice orange game cubes. Oh, yeah, there you go.

You want to play it on an ugly game? You can do that No, it's great. I love it. So gross my third pick I continue to cheat I copy your homework on the first two and now I'm just including more compilations of compilations and then my last one is this completely I've decided that I'm gonna cheat on these top tens every time.

They were collected into physical releases I can buy most of them separately, but the physical releases are really great They were known as the Sega 3D reprint archives in Japan only for the the first and third game The first game included echo fantasy zone outrun outrun 3d shinobi 3 space area Three dings streets of rage Japan only in the second one second 3D reprint archives Two known as the classic collection in North America Included altered beast fantasy zone again Fancy zone 2w fantasy zone 2 Sega Master System Edition galaxy force to maze walker Sega Master System Edition these two master system games are exclusive to Discollection you can't buy them separate because they're not say it's a pretty classic They're just the master system games right power drift poo to sonic one and thunderblade and the third one they went back to Japan only again I don't know why I got after burner alien syndrome champion boxing columns Girls garden gunstar heroes sonic two streets rage two super hang on thunderforce three and turbo outrun some of those we never got here Even as individual 3d classics, so I don't believe I don't believe we got girls garden at all I think most of the rest of these we got I don't know about turbo outrun So I've been singing the praises of the Sega 3d classics line of games for quite some time now I maintain that there's some of the best work done by M2 even the M2 Sega classics on switch pale in comparison to these 3d classics Each game has tons of options.

They all have very tasteful 3d. These are some only games I turn 3d on for And and they even have the occasional unlockable to incentivize repeated playthrough and then we talked about on our fantasies own episodes Yeah, there's stuff you options in new modes that you can unlock as you play which is I always really appreciate in these compilations Because sometimes it's just like yeah, it's a bunch of ROMs cool And especially for arcade games and arcade style games sometimes there's not a lot of you know impetus to return right you just like alright I played fucking thunderblade. Why do I need to do it again right? I also stated previously in episodes 501 I believe I consider these versions of fantasies on one and two to be the definitive versions no version before Or after has been as feature-packed as good as enjoyable to me as a 3ds classic versions So if you're a fanciest-owned fan like these are the fantasies own games to play period And each of these was released separately and in equal quality, but in the US The the compilation is is I think it's the best selection of the three Yeah, it's the one with it, you know, you've got all two beasts you got both fantasy zones You got power drift, we'll put your sonic one it kind of covers all of your bases Right and I just think it's it's some of the most feature No streets are ages is downside but it's just some of the most interesting fun worthwhile series of compilations I've I've ever seen It's definitely worth adding all three of these to a hacked 3ds if you can get the physical version of the US version It's great.

It comes with stickers and everybody loves stickers and one of the stickers is like a Genesis style I forgot what they called it They came up with a name for the three classics engine and they named it something and they released a Genesis style logo of what it's called It's called like mega engine or something And it's such a cool I've it on my 3ds. It's such a cool sticker. I love these collections I was so disappointed with M2's switch collections. They're three well What do they call them on switch think they just called them segated segated is that's what it is They copied their ps2 naming scheme for the releases there.

There was also a second-sided collection called segated Just oh yeah, there was wasn't there. Yeah But it's a pretty easy name for segated use. Let's just say backwards the the oh my god I was playing paulkmont with my daughter and I told her to read ekkins his name backwards and she goes It says snake blew her mind and then after that she goes and it is a snake I was like yes welcome welcome anyway. They're just super good.

I highly recommend them There's so much fun even though the segated is on switch like they're really really good collections. They're so good They're just not as good as these yeah by any stretch. So absolutely I consider these fear segofan a reason to own a 3ds period But absolutely I wish the Pokemon ekkins had the voice of solid snake He can in your head can he does One I'm gonna use midway arcade treasures Good one was on ps2 x walk game to npc between 0 3 0 4 the first one at least was developed by digital clips I'm not sure about the second or third center picks those up The first one's a good one the second third one do have some good games on there stuff like Mortal Kombat and hard drive it in San Francisco rush and hydro thunder, but those aren't the games that I want in these collections I'm looking for the old weird shit, especially the shit that I didn't get a chance to play in the arcades Cuz I love weird old arcade games, especially the ones I didn't get to play. I know it's weird So the first one the one that I enjoy the most it's got a bunch of old Institutional clips obviously the emulation is good But it's a bunch of old games from Williams midway and sorry games the the full list Yeah, 720 blaster bubbles defender defender to gauntlet joust joust to clacks marble madness paperboy rampage rampart road blasters Robotron Satan's hollow sinestar smash TV flat spy hunter super sprint tap or tube in inventators That's a shitload of games for one collection sure and a lot of them are good This was the collection where I discovered bubbles.

Have you played bubbles before I've not okay? Is it is it the prequel to bubble bath babes you you play as a bubble in a sink The game field is a top-down view of a sink and you're a bubble and you're trying to get big enough to go down the drain Life is similar in the 80s, but there's razor blades in the sink. Oh my god It's a simple basic game, but I love it and it's got a ridiculous premise and when we first found it I was playing it with several my friends We were in our twenties at the time because you know when this game came out and we saw it I was like the stupid of shit and then we ended up aggressively playing drunk bubbles for like two hours It's it's great the whole compilation is great a lot of great games on there really good port of smash TV And because this generation of consoles all three of the consoles had dual analog joysticks smash TV supports dual analog on there Which is great? That's how it should be played not on two NES controllers.

Yeah, but it's good. It's good Yeah, there was another midway compilation that Warner put out a few years later. I remember it went pretty simple right on 360 MPS 3 it's fine I feel like it doesn't have as good of a collection of games and also it feels like it's missing some charm despite its little arcade Menu system. I still prefer the one on the previous gen consoles new My fourth pick is when you gave to me and I soon you want to do Super Mario All Stars and I was like oh my god Yeah, Super Mario All Stars to me is not even a compilation.

It's just the best version of the first three Mario games I've been using this is Super Mario All Stars is a Super Nintendo game. I includes Mario 1 Mario 2 Mario 2 Japan and Mario 3 now featured updated graphics I've dated sounds proper save features for each game with different save slots a slew of small changes throughout each game They're all very very visually upgraded and for me at the time These are the ultimate versions of the Mario trilogy like I love that one it made them all visually similar Which I appreciate it because the first three games. Oh look really different They don't talk it's completely the same though like they do use to stick right to each of the three games They do but there's this kind of like general I don't know whatever it is But yeah, and so the first thing is like they look real different from one another and for kids going through each successive release I get it you want each one to be exciting in a different way It makes sense but for me the Mario trilogy always existed. I was born in 88 Mario 3 came out what 1990 Yeah, so by the time I was cognizant all three Mario games and always existed in my life right and so I liked that this one put them All together to give me save slots and stuff so I could not only play them in snippets because they were really hard for me Because it's very small but also have separate saves from my brother I also play my brother saves and get further in the games They they it was just so good as a kid I know that a lot of people struggle with these because the physics are different They're subtly different in Mario 1 at least and I never noticed that because again I just kind of always had this version in my whole life the NES versions have been like oh I'm gonna go play the old blocky versions like it's like a fun weird treat like when you go play a weird DOS port of a Mega Man game you're like oh yeah, this fucking shit is here.

Oh god because Mario's refer to as DOS Mega Man that's I'm granted a great inside that bad They're still very very good games in the room right, but I'll pick the Mario all-stars versions all day long every day I love this version. I was so impressed when Mario all-stars came out just because I got to see Mario in you know Advanced Super NES graphics, but it was still Mario games that you know I had previously played and loved yeah, and so that was super exciting me and having the save feature was also great We have it included Saturn a fourth secret Mario game right yeah the one that was only in Japan a whole Mario game I was so excited about that before it came out because I was like oh shit This is the one we never got and then I played it played the meanest Mario Yeah, it's like it was granted they made it less mean true, but it's still really mean Yeah, I've only ever finished it on the all-stars version. I've never been able to finish the original NES version But it's it was good. I really enjoyed it And I thought that that was just how we were gonna do everything going for it's like we're sure we make every NES game to look This good now.

Let's do that. I'm on board Let's remake all six Mega Man games so they look like super NES games and then we can throw the NES ones away And I didn't happen it was kind of dead on Genesis. Yeah, it wasn't as good But I was disappointed that we didn't get that because I wanted every NES game remade on Super NES we never sure it kind of made Since I mean you got the Ninja Guide and Trilogy remake you got the the Mega Man games on Genesis You got Mario all stars like it's not really a thing But enough of a thing that you can see some kid being like why don't we do this for everything? Yeah, it's worth mentioning this was famously re-released as a Wii game Which was literally just a Super Nintendo ROM on a fucking disk for like $40 in limited quantities $50 However much it costs now is probably astronomical.

Please don't buy it for the love of God There's also re-printed as a Nintendo select or whatever. That doesn't mean it's cheap anymore I just I don't know I've checked the price on I'm just saying it's just play all-stars on something It's or even bake yourself a virtual console version of all-stars for the yeah, cuz it's literally the exact same well It's on us it's nearly the exact same the same with your final pick you spoke one and two on the course of course Of course, it's not really good. Yeah, it's such a good compilation of these two the the compilation was done by Alpha System published by Hudson So it's E1 and E2 the classic Falcon PC games, but unlike the originals You don't have a level cap of 10 you instead have a level cap of a one to say 65 or 99 I don't remember all of a sudden, but it's it's much higher than 10 is the point and Your experience carries over between the two so when you finish these one you immediately go into ease to and you keep your experience And level you lose your your money and your items because otherwise the game would be completely fucking broken But it does give this like direct connection between the two games which story wise they always had but now it makes it physically one Solid contiguous game, which I always thought was so fucking cool Going back I think I might prefer the originals just because they are more balanced than this version But this was the first version of these games that I played and I absolutely love them Also, they're the first versions that had red book quality soundtracks and the soundtracks that each wanted to are so bad asked anyway that hearing them with real electric guitars just blew my fucking mind and Like 93 94 whenever I first played this just so good Absolutely go back and play these versions if you've not played ease one and two you should play this version It's very very very good and also the soundtrack is phenomenal So even if you have played other versions listen to the soundtrack from the term of C version He's wanted to just you know fantastic absolutely fantastic My final one is a cheat and I'm a cheat and it's retro game challenge. Oh, that's not cheap.

That's excellent I love this games included here cosmic gate Cara Korean into a hugger man Rally King star prince rally king sp car cuisine into hugger man too and a game I had called guardian quest since I played this Radio cast but looking closer. It's there's no R. Yeah, it's Guadi a quest. Yeah, all classics that everybody remembers from the childhood There are people that don't know where to game challenges compilation of games that never existed right made exclusively for this video game version of Games since your CX in which you play a young are no going to the video store checking out gaming magazines for secrets and playing through an Increasingly large pile of video games on his Famicom.

Yeah, and in addition to each game just being really fun on its own. It's super cute It's just this this wonderful peak into the life of a young boy growing up with a Famicom in the 80s Yeah, and this is a thing that you know, I know I talk about on the show sometimes But it's really important to me to figure out The historical context of a lot of the stuff we cover I mean at the end of the day we've maintained that we're gonna cover things the way that we see them and experience them in 2020 Whatever it is, you know when we're doing it here, but I think it's also important to understand the vibe at the time What it was like and this game does such a great job of just that excitement of weekly video store trips and previews of new games Magazines in the game and you got to search for codes and read the magazines And you'll see something advertised that'll show up in the video store and then you add it to your collection It has friends that come over and watch you play games which used to be a thing. Yeah The entire culture is for some of us right. Yeah, the entire culture of like 80s Japanese Nintendo Famicom Japan is sort of encapsulated in this experience.

It's really and it's so cute It's so fun. It's just a little metagame about this kid playing Famicom games And even if the games kind of sucked it would still be a great game, but they don't say every game every game in it is really good. Yeah It's it's they're all so much fun in the final game. Gaudia Quest is a full RPG.

Yeah, yeah, it's like it's not like 40 hours long No, it's a it's a full RPG. It's pretty close to the length of the original Dragon Quest to be honest. Yeah, and so it's it's crazy It's so much fun. It's kind of expensive to get now, but put it on our for and play it But also there have been two Japan only sequels as well as a remaster of the first game on switch.

Oh, that's right Yep, but sadly only the second game has received a fan translation Sales of the first game were apparently lackluster here So it seems unlikely we will ever see official releases of any kind barely got advertised at all true It was it was right on the heels. I think was Kotaku published the American version of game So it's the X called retro game challenge and one it was bad Yeah, one day we should just do a whole episode about how bad that version of it was because it cut all the cool shit out, right? And so that was I don't know who the weird dub and I mean the dub was fine I'm okay with the dub because one of my only complaints of games to the X is I can't watch it in the background while I play game Because it's subbed but they cut out all the sections of Arnold just kind of traveling around Japan and experiencing Japanese culture Which is what gives the show context and makes it cool to us. I think it's a charm.

Oh Anyway, retro game challenges is a fantastic DS game It's also just by coincidence a fantastic compilation of really cool games that you literally can't play anywhere else because right there for existed Yeah, anywhere else. I'm so absolutely throw this on a hacked dual screen portable if you have one because I mean It's it's fun to do this part or load it up on your 3ds if you got a hack to whatever you want to slap it on to Yeah, you know two touch screens attached to a Raspberry Pi that you glued together however you want to manage that a hacked Wii U your tank mode PC monitor Which puts us in honorable mention territory we are over on time and guys here We're just gonna fire through real quick. Yeah, Megamans your collection on DS. Like I said in my section It's really good.

It doesn't have zx But it's a really good version of zero and has some special ways to play the game that don't exist in the originals Tekken 5 is a compilation it includes Tekken 5 and in the arcade versions of Tekken's one two and three oh and Starblade which is like an on-rails shooter that you play during the loading screens. Oh, yeah So weirdly Tekken 5 is also regarded as one of the best seconds But it's just a compilation of several games. That's a it's unfortunate You have to push through all that Tekken to get to starblade though. It's sure I'm trying to learn to love Tekken maybe guy can coach me on it, but I want to learn I want to be a Tekken person.

I like Tekken tag. Yeah, Nintendo land I put in here I think that counts It's a compilation of games and again a compilation games you can't play anywhere else in my god Nintendo land on Wii U is so fucking good Yeah, what are your honorable mentions? Yeah, it's a bunch of them as far as final thoughts I wrote more games is good me like more games more games less money better. So there Like game I don't know what I was going on in my head when I wrote initial and final thoughts But it was suppose it was a one serious one series of thoughts that all things funny my hand when I wrote it I like compilations. I'm a sucker for them I'll buy them I'll buy them on old systems and I'll buy them on new systems That's I just can't stop myself my favorite are compilations that are better than emulation like I was playing the Mega Man Battle Network collection and I was like do I want to play this on an emulator device or on original hardware or do I want to Play this version? I don't know I kind of like how emulators look better than this version But then I looked and I was like oh it includes like chip trading and all this extra shit That's not gonna be in an emulated version of it And that makes it not only convenient just kind of the first aim of compilations of like hey It's on a system that you're currently playing which is cool Yeah, but then it's also like hey it includes stuff that you can't we've recreated the Experience of this of e-reader and trading chips or whatever which makes it, you know suddenly superior to the original I do love the font I chose for the network collection. What the fuck's that font? I do struggle with a lot of these compilations getting them on PC though For some reason anytime I get a compilation of emulated games on PC All I can think is I could have already emulated this on my PC without giving them money first Whereas my consoles I don't care cuz I'm like couldn't have easily done this good This is a fancier presentation or whatever But on my PC no matter how nice or good the presentation is I'm just like or I could have just be a loaded up retro Arch that's also a thing I could have done I think that's why it's good ones that include this is why I don't love those Konami ones It's just kind of barebones like it's just the game right yeah the Mega Man ones are like we've included new modes new ways to play New ways to experience it.

It's the same people who have their their 26-inch TV mounted above their fireplace 12 feet away from the couch Right, but it's perfect in that space. Yeah, yeah, all right Yeah, I mean my wife got given that big bag of VHS tapes by her family And they kept being like talking to Harper like you know what these are you never went watch them I was like I watch tapes all the time So her time is not a thing right because we raise and tapes have existed simultaneous to her whole she's like a different way to watch a Movie, you know, like she doesn't have any concept right and they're all like whoa And I'm like yeah, we got we got to yeah, it's not not weird to her Am I just weird when I explained her the phones used to be attached to the wall and she's like why?

I'm like we didn't know how to not do that It's only way we know how to do it my when I was real little in the 80s Our my neighbors had a cordless telephone and I could reach all the way out to their swimming pool in the backyard And I was like these people within a fucking future. Oh Man, I went to my aunt's house once when I was little and her like hallway phone with a rotary phone Yeah, well, that's what we had we had a rotary phone in every room except for the kitchen Where was I touch no my mom had one that looked like a rotary phone, but it's a touch no we had rotary phones and all the rooms except for the kitchen So anytime we actually had to dial something we'd always go to the kitchen first and have somebody else pick up one of the other Phones and then we would dial it in the kitchen and then once it started reading hang up the kitchen phone then run to the other Room to resume talking I think it's a guy thanks for producing the show. It's awesome and I'm glad you back and I hope you never leave I hope you continue to enjoy the documents, but also the truth is available for us.
