Revelation 07: Jesus is Our Shepherd

from The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading · host Brandon Cannon

Jesus is our shepherd. Those words carry profound comfort for Christians facing persecution, just as they did for the early church when the Book of Revelation was first written. What if we approached this often-mysterious text not as a cryptic prediction of distant future events, but as an urgent message of hope for believers suffering right now? When John penned Revelation toward the end of the first century, Christians were being fed to lions in the Colosseum. Peter and Paul had been martyred. The message that "Jesus wins" wasn't abstract theology—it was a lifeline for people whose very existence was threatened because of their faith. The 144,000 sealed followers described in chapter 7 would have reminded the original readers of Ezekiel 9, where God protected a remnant of faithful people before judgment fell. This wasn't about a precise headcount but a promise that God would preserve all His people through tribulation. The vast multicultural crowd in white robes standing before God's throne presents a beautiful picture of victory through suffering. When Revelation promises that "the lamb on the throne will be their shepherd" leading them to "springs of life-giving water" where God "will wipe away every tear," it speaks directly to those enduring persecution. The application remains powerful today: nothing—not rejection, marginalization, or even violent opposition—can separate us from God's protective care. While some face literal life-threatening persecution worldwide, others experience subtler forms of pressure for their faith. The promise remains the same: we are sealed by God, and nothing can snatch us from His hands.Have you considered how Revelation might be speaking to your present struggles rather than just predicting distant events?
