Revelation 11 - Killed in the Street, Raised in Front of the World

After eating the sweet-and-bitter scroll, John is told plainly: he must prophesy again. Chapter 11 delivers on that with one of the most vivid and debated stories in the whole book — two witnesses given remarkable power, killed in the street in full public view, and then raised again while the world watches.Measuring the TempleJohn is given a rod and told to measure the temple, altar, and worshippers — but not the outer court, which has been handed over to the nations for 42 months. Measuring throughout Scripture signals protection and ownership; what’s left unmeasured has been given over to hostility, but only for a limited, purposeful period.The Two WitnessesClothed in sackcloth and given power reminiscent of Elijah (stopping rain) and Moses (turning water to blood), these two witnesses are best read as a picture of the church’s faithful prophetic testimony across history — mourning, empowered, and persecuted all at once.Killed, Mocked, and Left UnburiedA beast from the abyss kills them, and their bodies are left in the street as people from every nation celebrate — a picture of how the world often responds to faithful witness: not conviction, but relief that the voice has been silenced.Raised in Full Public ViewAfter three and a half days, breath from God enters the witnesses and they stand up, ascending in a cloud as their enemies watch. It’s resurrection language deliberately patterned after Christ’s own story — the apparent defeat was never the final word.The Third Woe Is a VictoryUnlike the first two woes, the seventh trumpet doesn’t bring disaster — it brings an announcement that the kingdom of the world has already become the kingdom of Christ.
