Revelation 17-18

from The Safe Space · host Esther Parham

Welcome to The Safe Space! Where we last left off in the Bible, the final bowls of God’s wrath brought devastating judgment upon the earth. Humanity still refused to repent, and the world stood on the edge of its final confrontation with God. Now, John is shown the shocking downfall of Babylon—the great symbol of worldly power, corruption, luxury, and rebellion against God. One of the seven angels who had poured out the bowls takes John into the wilderness to witness the judgment of the great prostitute who sits beside many waters. John sees a woman seated on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names. The beast has seven heads and ten horns. The woman is dressed in extravagant purple and scarlet clothing and covered with gold, precious stones, and pearls. In her hand is a golden cup filled with the impurities of her immorality. Written across her forehead is a mysterious name: “Babylon the Great,” identified as the mother of prostitutes and of the earth’s detestable practices. John is horrified to discover that she is drunk with the blood of God’s people and those who testified about Jesus. The angel explains the mystery. The beast once existed, then disappeared, and will rise again before going to destruction. The seven heads represent seven hills and seven kings, while the ten horns represent ten kings who will receive authority for a brief time. These rulers will unite with the beast and wage war against the Lamb. But their apparent power cannot prevail. The Lamb will defeat them because He is Lord of all lords and King of all kings, and His chosen and faithful followers will stand with Him. Then comes a stunning reversal. The beast and the ten kings will turn against the woman they once supported. They will strip her of everything, consume her with fire, and leave her completely devastated. Through these events, God’s purpose will be accomplished. The woman is identified as the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. Then another angel descends from heaven, and the earth shines with his glory. A powerful announcement rings out: “Babylon is fallen!” The city that intoxicated the nations with her immorality has become a dwelling place for demons and every kind of evil spirit. God’s people are commanded to leave her so they will not share in her sins or receive her punishment. Her pride, corruption, and wickedness have reached heaven, and God remembers what she has done. The kings who participated in her corruption mourn when they see her destruction. Merchants who became wealthy through her extravagant lifestyle weep because their riches have vanished in an instant. Sailors and shipmasters also mourn as they watch the smoke rising from the burning city. But heaven responds with celebration. God’s people, apostles, and prophets are told to rejoice because God has judged the city that caused them such suffering. Finally, a mighty angel throws a huge millstone into the sea, declaring that Babylon will be thrown down with the same finality. Her music, commerce, craftsmanship, celebration, and light will disappear forever. Her wealth deceived the nations, and her violence against God’s people brought judgment upon her. Babylon’s power seemed unstoppable—but in a moment, everything collapses. Earth mourns her fall, while heaven rejoices over God’s righteous judgment. The great city has fallen, and the way is being prepared for the final victory of the Lamb. Verse of the Day: 1 Corinthians 15:58 Be steadfast, immovable, always abiding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Question of the Day: Are you stubbornly redeemed or just stubborn?
