Revelation 9 - Why Judgment Alone Can Never Produce Repentance

Two woes down, one to go. Chapter 9 gives us one of the strangest, most nightmarish images in all of Revelation — locusts that aren’t really locusts, a king from the abyss with a name in two languages, and an army beyond any number that could ever be counted. This episode walks through what John is actually describing, and more importantly, why.The Fifth Trumpet: Locusts From the AbyssA star falls from heaven and is given the key to the abyss — the place of imprisonment for demonic forces. What emerges isn’t a natural locust plague; it’s a composite, nightmarish image built from the most fearsome things John’s audience could imagine: cavalry, armor, human faces, lion’s teeth.Torment, Not DeathThese “locusts” are specifically forbidden from harming grass or trees — only those without God’s seal. The torment is scorpion-like and so severe that people will long to die and be unable to. It’s one of the darker lines in the whole book.Abaddon and Apollyon: Naming a Role, Not a RulerThe king of the abyss is given a name in both Hebrew and Greek, both meaning “destroyer.” John isn’t pointing to a specific historical figure — he’s naming destruction itself, personified, and permitted but limited by God.The Sixth Trumpet: An Army of 200 MillionFour angels bound at the Euphrates are released to kill a third of mankind with an army whose number is symbolic rather than literal — meant to convey overwhelming scale, not a literal headcount.The Hardest Line in the ChapterEven after locusts, an army beyond counting, and a third of humanity dying, the rest of mankind still doesn’t repent. This is the theological center of the chapter: judgment alone, no matter how severe, cannot manufacture faith. Faith is always the Spirit’s gift.This chapter is a sobering reminder that hardship doesn’t soften hearts on its own — only the Word does.
