Hi, I'm Holly and I'm Hailey. Welcome to Mountain Mysteries, Tales from Appalachia. You know I'm really feeling that, uh, was that right? I'm starting to feel that manacari.
That was good. Yeah. Thank you for feeling my belly. Yeah, I had some good ravioli.
Yes indeed. What's from the Olive Garden? No, but what's with those outside time? Whatever time we record.
This is what we do. We get together, we eat plenty of carbs and then we're ready to give you some great stories. Yeah, a lot of murder. A lot of choppy, nothing dismembrable.
There has been quite a heavy focus on the dismembrability. Yeah, I mean, it has been. Yeah. Lots of blood and guts.
Yeah. Keep it with us. It doesn't your body. Yeah.
I've got to open that door. Oh, yeah. Let's not go there with what's wrong with us. That will take all day.
Yeah. My mic is currently just falling, you know. Falling right off there. Essentially from the sky, just falling way down.
Oh, because my janky zip-takes come off. Oh, is that why? Okay, let's see if I can get back on. That's why I'm like, what is going on with my microphone?
Well, Holly's fixing that. I'm going to have to insert some elevator music and, uh, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it. So here's some weird background noise. So let's fix it in the microphone.
Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, Mother. Is it just, okay. Okay, hold tight. I can fix it.
Okay. I can fix it. Okay. All right.
Technical difficulties, everyone. It's all right. Here. Back.
Oh, and her mic just fell over. Oh, so I'm never said we were good at this. Yeah. Okay.
I mean, come on. There's zip-tied. There's literally, listen, and I even ordered, like, things to make it to where they don't have to be zip-tied, and it still didn't work. So we're rolling with a janky zip-tied.
Well, in the zip-tied, it's been effective. They have until, like, right now, but it's fine. It's okay. Well, it could be the ghost in your place.
We're actually recording in your place this time. Yeah. So it could be the ghost who's just screwing with us. Yeah.
Bear it with a bill. It's a bill. It's a bill for the love of God. Stop.
We're trying to move forward. We're trying to move forward. Bill enough. Oh my God.
What was happening whenever you just said this? Okay. I thank you for your interest. I'm so, I look forward to this every week.
Okay. So today, I don't know if you recall, but I promised you a UFO story. And that's exactly what you're going to get. I say I'd forgotten already.
Oh my God. Sorry. What's the fact? Wow.
It was just a week. I know. I know. You're right.
I'm not ever seen. She doesn't care. I'm so excited. Okay.
She is. Okay. So we were traveling back to September of 1961. Okay.
All right. So as always, I talked about the number one song. It was going on. So do you know this one?
The number one song was Take Good Care of My Baby by Bobby V. I know Bobby V. I don't know that song. Take good care of my baby.
Yes, I do. Okay. Thank you. You're welcome.
I always need just a few bars and then I get there. Well, it gives me an opportunity to showcase my terrible singing. It was lovely. Oh, thank you.
Your checks in the mail. All right. So also, NASA announced that they had a new spacecraft center that would be built in Houston, Texas. You know, the Houston, we have a problem.
This was later to be named the Lyndon B. Johnson after the president, Space Center. And also, the CIA, also known as the Central Intelligence Agency, moved to Langley, Virginia after being scattered throughout like 33 different buildings in Washington, DC. That seems super safe.
Right. I don't know where they are. Yeah, I don't love it. The city was just like floating around out there.
Yeah. Who didn't know where they are? They made them how they liked it though. Probably.
Yeah. Yeah. So they're not just all in one building. I just see like black coats and like some church groups.
Yeah. Pretty much. Yeah. All right.
So I promised you aliens. And that's what you're going to get. OK. So we are traveling to Port Smith, New Hampshire.
And before you come at me, New Hampshire is in Appalachia. That's really. It is. I checked it.
Nice. Yes. So just so you know. All right.
Goes all the way to Maine. Yes. To Maine. You had to follow that Appalachian drill.
Exactly. All right. So Port Smith, New Hampshire is September 1961. We have a couple, Betty and Barney Hill, not to be confused with Betty and Barney Rubble from the Flintstones.
They were an interracial couple. And that is so uncommon for this time period. Well, you're just going to say this is 1961. I'm going to say this is a progressive.
Right. Me too. And talk about progressive, right? So not only were they an interracial couple who married in their late 30s or 40s still later in life.
Love it. They were part of the Unitarian Church. They were members of the NAACP. Nice.
And the husband actually sat on the commission for civil rights. Good for him. Yeah. I like this couple here.
I really like this couple. They had only been married for 16 months. OK. So they were relatively well.
Yeah. And due to their work schedules, Barney worked as a third shift postmaster at the post office. And Betty was a social worker for the Department of Social Services. Oh, social workers.
So she worked in child welfare. Nice. Yeah. So they both had really busy schedules.
And because of that, after they got married, they weren't able to take a honeymoon. And desiring to have some time off and some time alone with each other, they decided to play on this three day vacation to Canada. Nice. Yeah.
So it was a car trip. It's about five or six hour drive. They took their dog with them. Oh, I know, right?
So they drove to Montreal and then on to Niagara Falls. And they had a really great time. It was like a nice decompressing. Oh, we finally get some respite kind of vacation.
Nice. Yeah. Yeah, it sounds good. I would love that.
I know. Now, I'm not much of a car. I don't like to travel by car. No.
I just have a bad back because I'm 87. Oh, yeah. So yeah, I'm sitting in one position for too long. It's very painful.
So I don't do cars very well. Yeah. I've been having some back pain lately. Anyway.
All right, back to our story. So they had a really great time. And on September 19, 1961, they are driving back home. OK.
So they're going through the White Mountains in New Hampshire. So they finally make it into New Hampshire. They're in around an area called Lancaster. It's 10.30 PM.
Both are really tired. And I know about you. But even three hours of driving and just being on the road. And even after a vacation, you're always out doing stuff.
You're exhausted. Yeah. And there's always, I don't know, just for me, kind of that. I can't wait until I can get home.
Just think of my bed. Yeah. I mean, I love a vacation. But I always am really excited to go home.
So Betty and Barney are both awake. Barney is driving. And Betty's just sitting there in the passenger side. When she sees some kind of light that's weaving in and out of the sky, kind of through the trees, it almost seems to be following them.
That's terrifying. Well, yes. But then you think about, well, maybe it's just a bright moon. Maybe it's just, you know.
Yeah. Yeah. Great. I mean, so Betty thought actually it was a falling star.
Oh, have fun. Yeah. Maybe she caught it and put it in her pocket. But maybe it were rained.
It actually started moving upward and getting bigger and brighter. So. Oh, little like that. Yeah.
Probably pulled out a falling star. So Betty says to Barney, hey, why don't you pull over. We need to walk the dog anyway. And I kind of want to get a better look at what the heck this light is.
Yeah. So Barney blides and he's like, OK, he pulls over at the scenic picnic area south of Twin Mountain, New Hampshire. So Betty gets out her binoculars and she looks through them and she sees an oddly shaped structure with moldy colored lights. And instantly she thinks, is this a flying saucer?
Right. And that's an interesting thought to have. Like, oh, what happens if you have a flying saucer? Now, Barney is a lot more practical.
And Barney's like, no, this is not a flying saucer. You know, this is probably a commercial airplane, is what you're seeing. And Barney quickly changed his mind after the aircraft descended and moved in their direction. And it was that plane is coming right at them.
That's so funny. Right. I would know. Get back in your car.
And that is exactly what they did. Good. Right. That was a smart move.
I would have just run. Don't walk. So they got back in the car and started driving on a narrow mountainous road. They were driving really slow in large part because it was narrow, but also because they wanted to watch the object.
As I was getting closer to them. Don't watch that object. You just got to go. Right.
That was going to be choked up. Sorry there. That's OK. Yeah.
It's OK. We need to lay off the bottle, Hayley. She is. It's getting crazy tonight.
It's crazy up in here. No, it's literally like 730. I'm already ready for bed. Me too.
I'm on the bed. It's so late. I know. I've got a long drive home.
It's OK. All right. So Betty actually had her window rolled down so she could pay closer attention to it. Which I have moved, Betty.
I wouldn't have done. I would have like invited it in. No, you just leave that outside. Keep that glass between us.
That's very COVID, isn't it? Just keep that glass between us. So Betty observed it to be about 40 feet long and it started rotating and moving back and forth. Ooh.
Yeah, I know. And the craft descended on their car and hovered about 180, 800 to 100 feet above their 1957 Chevy, Bel Air, which is a gorgeous car by the way. I'm kind of wondering now if it was blue and what the interior was. So I don't know if you'll know, but I am like a car geek.
I love cars. I didn't know that. Yeah. That's like my secret.
Yeah. Interesting. So Barney was thinking, OK, he looked at it and he thought that it looked like a giant pancake. I love Barney.
I would say. Yeah, that's pancake. Yeah, it reminds me of that time that I hopped. And so Barney decided, you know what, they stopped the car and he said, I'm going to get out of the car.
That's ballsy. Yeah, that is. I would not have done that. No, I would have just kept on driving.
But Barney's like, no, let's see what this is. So Barney gets out of the car and brings his pistol with him because, well, you know, when I go on a road trip, I say to myself, why don't I just bring my pistol? Because you don't even know what's going to happen. I mean, I do not.
No, we need to. No, no. I don't even bring binoculars and luckily they have those. So he gets out of the car.
He's got his pistols and he says binoculars. So he looks through the binoculars and he sees what appears to be eight to 11 humanoid figures. Who were, and yet this is my favorite part, they were urinating out of the aircraft windows and at the same time watching him. Lots of questions, huh?
I have so many. So this is kind of like, you know, when you're on a road trip and, you know, you have to pull over because one of the guys has to pee and they're just able to do that on the side of the road. So the driver of the aircraft was like, all right, anybody that needs to, we're not stopping. And eight to 11 stood up and said, me.
Me, me, me. So, you know, interesting. Right. I particularly love the eye content.
Yeah. And this is just me. Usually when I'm urinating and yes, I urinate, we all do. I don't like to look at anybody.
I like to just do my thing, get in, get out. Right. Yeah, I don't like to, you know, there's no need for an audience. No, no, no, the stare at people while I'm peeing.
That's why we have stalls. Exactly. What do we do? Exactly.
But aliens don't really care about privacy. Certainly. They were making really intense eye contact with him. Several of them scattered and moved to the front of the craft and one looked at him and through some type of communication was able to articulate, stay where you are and keep looking.
That's, see, in my mind, the aliens just want, they just want to know about us. They're just curious little fellas. But these little little sinister. I love, are like, what cute little fellas.
Either that or they want to eat us. I mean, that could be. Or just be like, man, they've really screwed up their planet. All type of society.
We just got to detonate this. I love that line from Mrs. Doubtfire where he says, we came here looking for intelligent life. Oops, we made a mistake.
Yeah, I feel like that's what happened. Yeah. That's what I expected. No, but it does mean very sinister.
It does look stay where you are. Right. Stay where you are. Don't move.
I don't like that. No, but keep looking. Okay. Yeah, there's more urine.
So Barney observed that they were wearing glossy black uniforms and caps. I'm saying you like, oh my gosh, that feels very broadway. I know. I like this.
I like this. See if I'm going to make it better. I think so. See if I can't make anything better.
Yes. Just saying. Just saying. So all of a sudden these red lights appeared and a telescope descended from the door.
Okay. So Barney has a binocular around his neck and he takes them away from his eyes and he runs like hell back to the car. Yeah. Who wouldn't?
I wouldn't have gotten another car to the place. No, I'd have been like, we're out of here. Maybe, you know, he's like, I'm going to protect my lady. Like I respect that.
Yeah. That's good. A little crazy. Anyway, so he gets back in the car and he turns to the bed and he says, they're going to capture us.
Oh my. What's he doing that moment? I wouldn't have been in that moment because I wouldn't have stopped the car. Yeah, me neither.
I'd have been the way I'd be almost home. But what, you know, your husband has stopped the car now. So now he's still leaving his ass on the side of the road. No, he has made his choices.
And now he has to live with him. Well, he's been married 16 months. I know we're no bad. It's like, we got another one.
I learned after our vacation that we're not compatible. No, he'd have been on the side of the road and I'd have been gone. Yeah. So he could be eaten by aliens.
Yes. He's such a good wife. So they quickly drove away. So they started like, oh, okay.
Oh, no, we're not going to sit here and wait for them to eat our brains. And again, Betty falls down her window. Daddy, watch like Betty. Stop it.
No. They heard all of a sudden this beeping and buzzing sound and it vibrated against the entire car. Like it felt like it was going against like the truck of their car, like slowly making its way. Yeah.
Then they felt the sensation pass through their body. It's like, we're almost like electric current sensation goes through their body. And their minds don't until then altered state of consciousness. I don't like that either.
I don't like that. That's, I mean, it altered state of consciousness, you know, whatever, whatever you jam it. Right. But not like when you're driving.
But not when you're driving. That's not handy. Do that in the safety of your own home. I'm saying, I'm not working on that.
I mean, just saying. Yeah. Do what you gotta do. Just saying.
And then they heard more beeping and again full awareness of everything that was going on sensations and how they felt. Weird. Yeah. But once they have regained full awareness, they actually traveled 35 miles, but only recall like moments of it.
I don't like, I mean, okay. Have you ever done that thing where you're like, you're driving home from work? Or from the store and you're just bebopin' along. And then you get home and you're like, huh.
I don't remember like half that drive. I like how I got here. Most days. Yeah.
Yeah. I did that often. Yeah. So I get that, but not like 35 minutes of it.
Well, when I got here today, I was like, wow, I'm here. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Did you get abducted by aliens in that time frame? Possibly. Maybe. Okay.
So now there have been two cases. Listen, if you pay me enough, I'll tell you the whole story. Maybe after the podcast. Oh, good to know.
Well, what a nightmare to cotty and money. I got aliens around me only. Yay. Party.
All right. So they did remember a term that they had taken. And on this turn where they stopped in the road, there was a fiery orb. You know, just hang out in the road.
Okay. So we have a spinning pancake. We have urinating humanoids. And now we have a fiery orb.
Yes. All right. Just one of my shows caught up. This is just a normal week night for me.
Oh, this is what you do on your week. Listen, at least I'm not murdering. Just saying. I'm just talking about.
Sure. So finally they got home. Their clothes were disheveled. They had this weird feeling in their bodies.
They felt like they had been touched. Oh, no. Yeah, they felt dirty. Like they had a dirty feeling to their body.
They just felt like, oh, so they couldn't explain it. Their watches had actually stopped. Oh. And never worked again.
They both took long showers because they felt so dirty. Yeah. They wanted to get clean. Yeah.
Barney felt compelled to look at his genitals. Okay. I mean, I feel like it's a normal life thing. Right.
And it's also like good for, you know, checking for cancer and things. Yeah. We should do that. This is your PSA.
This is your normal PSA. Yeah. Check your genitals. Ladies and gentlemen and our friends in between.
Do that. It's important. We got from things like, dude, spread COVID to check your genitals. I'm serious.
It's important if you never check them, you'll never know if something is weird or like, and then it may be too late. That's right. So do it. Check your genitals.
Check them. So they noticed that her dress had little like weird pink dust spots on them and her dress was torn. Torn it like the back where you zip it up. Okay.
And she was like, okay. She decided this is like, I can't even fix this dress. So because at first she had hung it back up in the closet, which why would she wash it if like, your dress is dirty? Yeah.
I mean, I've done the thing where you like come home and you're like, I guess pants aren't that dirty. And I kind of go back into the rotation. But if I had like, right, pink dust and a tear, I think I'd be washing them. Yeah.
We're trying to mend that. Yeah. Well, she decided that this was unmingable. I don't know if that's a word.
It is now. Oh, that's right. Yeah. I'm sorry.
And then she thought to herself, well, you know, maybe I should just hang on to it. So she picked it back up, put it back in the closet. Okay. When they examined their car the next day, they noticed that their car had little concentric circles and they decided to put their compass near the circles, right?
As one does. Obviously. And it started spinning erratically. And then they moved it to where the circles were not present and it stopped and it moved off.
Okay. So clearly, even the compass doesn't even know where the hell the aliens came from. Right. You know?
Who knows? So a couple of days later, Betty decided, you know what? I know I saw. I'm going to call the U.S.
Air Force and I'm going to report that we saw your vote. Okay. So Betty and Barney were interviewed. And prior to that, Betty started reading up a little bit more on UFOs, you know, more about fine saucers, abductions, all that fun stuff.
Okay. Barney on the other hand kind of had more of a mental block. He didn't want to dive into this. Understand?
Yeah. He's kind of like, ehh, this may or may not have happened. I think we just need to let it go. Yeah.
Just move on from this. And Betty couldn't let it go. Like, you know, this was, you know, this happened, this was something that she was experiencing. She was going through the emotions of it.
And Barney just kind of wasn't in the place where he wanted to deal with that emotionally. Okay. So, 10 days after the event, Betty started having some detailed dreams. So, five nights in a row, night after night after night.
She started dreaming about these human-like figures who were taking her and Barney through the woods. And Barney was actually walking behind her. She was assorted by these ray creatures. Ooh.
Yeah. Who had these really dark eyes. And she explained that they were actually wearing like dark blue colored clothing and dark blue caps. So, it's a little different than what Barney said.
Okay. So, maybe not as jazzy. Not as jazzy. No, no.
I mean, he didn't say sequence, but... I really wanted it to be sequence. I'll just... I have an image now in my head.
Now, she's ruined it. Yep, right. Anyway, so they are taken to separate examination rooms. And she says that a being comes in and is known as the examiner.
Do they get probed? Wait for it. Oh, God. I know.
Wait for it. So, the examiner comes in and is actually very nice to her. She spoke to her and was actually speaking to her in English. But communicating with the others in some type of language that she didn't really understand.
They took pieces of her hair. Okay. They took scrapes of her skin. And they put a needle into her belly button which she started screaming because obviously that would hurt.
She was in this pain and the creature, the examiner, simply waved his hand in front of her eyes in the pain slot. Well, that's handy. Right? Just think of how many people wouldn't have like an opioid addiction.
If we were able to just wear our hand. That would be wonderful. Nice. Right?
It's just so many problems. I don't want to. Well, you know, you just, you have your in that agony. You know, and then the alien comes in and waves his hand and the baby's there and you didn't even know what happened.
Maybe we should employ them. I think so. I think that would be helpful. I really do.
Asciasologist now lives jobs now. Yeah, I mean, maybe it ends. If you're in, you don't know. Because you're in, you're in, you don't know.
We've solved it. Anesthesiologist, really is excellent. If you're out there and you're anesthesiologist and you're listening, you probably just turned off. You can let us know that you're not an alien by emailing us.
Yeah, we'll get to that at the end. Yeah. Yeah. Hang out for a minute.
Exactly. So she also recalls when she was talking with them. She asked them where they were from. Okay.
And they showed her some kind of map with a bunch of stars. Just random stars and was like, oh, we're from, we're from, we're from, you know. And yeah, they also gave her a book to take home. Like here, take this as a souvenir.
Like from our library. Exactly. This is the freeback in two weeks. Or you'll get by.
Yeah. It's a pay money to your local. Well, it's like your brain. Well, that's the highest pay money.
Okay. Yeah. The other one is you can't take any more books. So it's a minute.
Oh, hello, books. They're okay. You know, I've been at a grad school a very long time. But grad school just like I was like, it does things to you.
It destroys part of your soul. It does. It does. But I do read because I research these stories.
So, you know. Thank you guys for making us read again. Thank you for making me read. Alright, so they actually took the book back from her though.
Oh, isn't that sucky? That sucks. Like here's a gift just getting you can't. Exactly.
That's not cool. That's sad. Yeah. Well, the reason that they took it back from her was because some of the other aliens were saying, no, no, no, we don't want her to have a memory of it.
Oh, okay. Yeah. And she tells them, listen, you can erase my memory, but one day I'm going to recall the story. Mm.
I mean, I don't know if I would be threatening the aliens. I wouldn't threaten them. They just broke me. No, but it.
Don't do that. Exactly. And again, post-shooter husband, pretty ballsy. Yeah.
Like an alien is probing my body and I'm going to get sassy with them. I don't know. I can see me doing that. I get that too.
And I'm keeping my book and I don't care if you find me. So finally, Betty and Barney were taken back to their car and told to watch the ship leave. Okay. And then they drove off.
By the time that they got home, which was supposed to be about a four hour drive, it actually took them seven hours to get home. Dang. Yeah. So a lot of time had passed.
That's, that's, yeah, excessive. It really is. And Betty decided that maybe the best way to recall all the details, because she was trying to put it together with what she could remember and then what was detailed in her dream. Right.
She decided that she needed to be hypnotized. I like it. Yeah. I think that's pretty cool.
Barney was a little skeptical. Yeah. I'm getting the feeling that Barney's like, I don't really want to be involved. Yeah.
You know, when she wakes him up and says, Hey, Barn, I've just had all these dreams. Yeah. He's supportive, but he's also like, great. You keep this to yourself.
Yeah. Yeah. He's like, Oh, that's nice. I mean, that's nice dear.
We can divorce, right? He decides that it's okay that he is willing to be hypnotized with her or separately because he thought it may help with the quote unquote nonsense of her dreams. So as much as he's supportive, he dreams are nonsensical, essentially says. Yeah.
Yeah. I mean, I'm with Barney. I'm not with his, you know, his train of thought here. Right.
Yeah. I understand. So over the course of several months, they end up driving back several times to try and retrace their steps and see if they can like find exactly the spot where they were when they were hovered and proved and all those fun things. You know, that happened.
You're an idiot. You're an idiot. Watched. Yeah.
Good times. But for some reason it was never able to trigger any memories. Okay. So they weren't about to get in.
Unfortunately, weren't. I mean, who wouldn't want to have that experience twice? Yeah. I mean, who boy?
Well, maybe she was just trying to return. Well, she didn't get the book. Maybe she tried to get the book. Yeah, I like that.
Yeah. She knew that book so bad. That sounds like something you would do. Oh, yes.
I just wanted that book. I had to go back. I must go back and get the book. So in 1963, so two years later, they were referred to a Boston hypnotist.
His name was Benjamin Simon. And he actually in talking with Barney felt that this was affecting Barney pretty negatively and Barney was a really anxious, nervous kind of guy. And he was actually kind of a mellow guy. And yeah, and his event actually put him on edge and make him really anxious and nervous.
And so this is something that Dr. Simon had observed and said, you know, I really think that we should go through with the hypnotizing. Okay. And they all they agreed in early 1964, Barney was the first to be hypnotized.
So Barney stated that when this abduction happened, he tried to keep his eyes closed. Okay. And because he was very, very scared and nervous about what was going to happen. I get it.
I understand. And Dr. Simon noted that while he was hypnotizing Barney, that Barney appeared to be visibly scared and almost shaking. Oh, yeah.
