Rewriting the Hero’s Journey: Peter Gunn on Storytelling, Power, and Female Representation

from Voices That Propel Us: Stories of Justice, Action, and Community · host Danise Sugita

Peter Gunn is a U.S. Air Force veteran, avid bodybuilder, coffee connoisseur, lead guitarist for the international band The Angellics, and a poet dedicated to reviving the epic literary traditions of the past. His life has been shaped by defining experiences—from a childhood near-death encounter at age seven to navigating morbid obesity and serving as an altar boy, where he began to notice the shortcomings within the Roman Catholic Church. After honorably serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, Peter became a father in 2010, which ignited his passion for introducing his daughter to classic poetry. Recognizing the absence of feminine representation within the traditional hero’s journey, he began writing The Amazons and developed LLP (Linked-Lyrical-Poetry), a modern poetic form that brings new energy to epic storytelling. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, Peter felt called to create the Sigma Squad graphic novel series—an accessible, visually driven narrative inspired by ancient Gnostic Gospels and aimed at awakening readers to deeper truths. In early 2025, Peter joined forces with musicians from Germany to form The Angellics. Their debut album, Hazing Hades, was released on August 17, 2025, marking a bold new chapter in Peter’s artistic journey.Want to be a guest on Voices That Propel Us: Stories of Justice, Action, and Community?
