Richard Sharum - Part One

from Foto Podcast · host Michael Howard

Welcome to the Foto Podcast. This is episode 7, and it’s the start of a 3-part episode series with documentary photographer Richard Sharum. In this episode, Richard talks about his approach to documentary photography, why he’s passionate about creating more empathy, and how photography can help bring people together. In Part 2 and Part 3 of my conversation with Richard, we will dive deep into two of his ongoing projects. In Part 2, we will talk about his ‘American Homicide’ project, where he covers murder in Dallas, Texas. In Part 3, we will talk about his ‘Spina America’ project, where he is documenting the people he meets in a 100-mile side corridor from the Texas/Mexico border up to Canada. His first book is titled “CAMPESINO CUBA” through GOST Books. In my conversation with him, we did not talk much about his work in Cuba, but I recently purchased a copy. After receiving it and going through it briefly, I will vouch for how high-quality Richard’s photography is and how well the book is printed. Richard’s work in Cuba is unique and worth your time to explore all the layers within it. You can support Richard’s work by purchasing any remaining copies of his ‘Campesino Cuba’ book or schedule a portfolio review with him through his website. Either way, his deep understanding of photography will move you, and he will challenge you to create more meaningful work. You can also follow Richard on Instagram. If you are enjoying the podcast, feel free to consider supporting Foto by becoming a paid subscriber to the Foto Substack.
