TIMELINE 1818: Their mansion was the center of social gatherings, and they were at the heart of Richmond's upper class. 1861: and America is on the grips of a bloody civil war that will change it forever. 1880: over 40 bodies were snatched from Oakwood Cemetery and shipped up north to various medical schools. WHY THIS MATTERS The story of Richmond is a reminder that the events that shaped America didn't always happen in the biggest cities.
