Rick was deeply affected by an experience he shared with his friend Mike in middle school, when they witnessed two unexplained phenomena in the sky. First, a craft silently falling from the sky, and then a set of glowing orbs hovering in a nearby field. Over time, however, Mike began to deny the incident ever occurred as a way to tease Rick. What started as lighthearted ribbing gradually wore on Rick, eventually leading him to question his own memory—and even his sanity—as he struggled to tell whether Mike was joking or genuinely disavowing the event.
