Your home for college football Saturdays is live with CBS Sports Analyst, Rick Newheisel, powered by Taco Time. Hungry?

At Taco Time, it's easy to create exactly what you're craving. And we wouldn't have it any other way. How do you taco time? Customize your meal and order ahead on the Taco Time Northwest app.

Taco Time, time for something different. Now with Rick Newheisel, here's Softee and Dave. You know, he's always giving me guff for leading off the radio show, reminding people that he lost the previous week if he did lose. So I got to make sure I give him consistent love, and I'm not sure no matter what.

But we got a winner, baby. We got a winner on our hands from week two back to 500 already. The under in the Ohio State, Texas game. Boom, Rick Newheisel was all over that.

That was an easy one for us. No sweat. Over that on Saturday afternoon from Columbus, Ohio. And we're off and running at one in one on the year so far with our Taco Time pick of the week.

You see, it's not just about when you lose, coach. All right, it's not. Well, I appreciate that. And both coaches played it close to the best, although start when a little out over skis with the four pounds.

And to me, that was the tale to take. The mis-portdown opportunity ended up being the undoing of the long ones. Well, first of all, we apologize for being late. You can blame Chris Peterson.

He was on before you. So you can always welcome to as much time as he needs. I will always relate with my time to the Senator Cremido. That's right.

Blame him for digging into your time. But go back to that game for a second, because man, the arch-manning thing, the hype on him was obviously crazy. And you and I talked last week about the league he played. And down there in Louisiana, how good a player is this guy?

Really? Is he really going to match the hype? What did you make of the prodigy, the Messiah, arch-manning last Saturday? Well, like we said a week ago, it was just over the top.

And it was ridiculous to think that he would meet those kind of expectations, especially against a defense that he didn't know what to expect. Remember, even though they played Ohio State the year before, this was a Matt Patriches defense. So it was a little bit different. And I just thought Sarcia should have leaned on his defense more.

I mean, the defense held Ohio State and Julian saying they're freshman quarterback to 203 yards. That's at all time low to be the number one team. And yet that's exactly what happened. And so listen, I think both these teams will be fine.

Both these teams probably make it to the college football playoffs. And I think arch-manning will be a good player. The question is, will it be a great player immediately? And the chances are that are small.

Well, Rick, we heard a lot. And maybe it was just from the fringe element saying, NIL's ruling college football. I'm out on college football. I'm not going to pay attention to it anymore.

Well, let's see what the ratings look like. ESPN, ABC, best week one ever. And the Texas Ohio State game was the best week one watch game in the history of Fox Television. So is that just because we had good games?

Or is there actually more interest in college football now that we have this model? Probably a little bit of both. Adley Corso to that debut game and just kind of checking him out. Listen, we love college football.

And the players deliver its idiot proof, as my radio partner says, its idiot proof. You put a bunch of good-looking players out there. They're going to perform and they're going to give you a game that you're going to remember and you're going to pull for. So, yeah, there's some problems that need to be fixed.

I just saw where the rules committee now is saying that, hey, we should have one transfer portal instead of two and it should happen in early January. Right when we're having the college football playoffs? Are these people out to lunch? What is going on with these folks?

We've got to pick up this fix and we've got to get it fixed fast. Hey, Rick Newheisels with us. Rick, we'll talk some dogs in a second coming off the win over the Rams over the weekend. UC Davis, FCS team is in town on Saturday, but got to ask you about Kailen to Bormann.

And I just wonder if there's any variables that would ever preclude you from wanting a job like that, like taking over for a legend, like your personality fit in a place like that, like the changing landscape of college football is NIL now more important than the credibility of a head coach and things like that. Maybe the financial wherewithal of a fan base versus the West Coast like in the South. But did he make a mistake? Honestly, taking that gig?

Only time will tell, but the four reasons that you just kicked off are reasons that everybody's wondering about. I mean, there's no question. You don't have a billionaire in the state of Alabama. I think there's one.

And that guy is a big Auburn fan. You absolutely are following in a legend. And why did the legend step away? There were eight guys in his office the morning after they got back from Michigan wanting a new deal.

And he just didn't have the wherewithal to get them all new deals. So they were gone. Most notably, Kailen Downs, who's now playing safety for Ohio State. So you've got that issue.

You've got the issue about you're not from there. So everything that you do is going to be scrutinized. I have a number of people reaching out to me about his body language. Like that's a big deal.

You know, they got mad because he wasn't wearing, you know, didn't have a collared shirt on one time last year. These are things that Kailen, not from the South, wasn't ready for. And while I look at his resume and say, relax, he'll get it done, the days of Kirby Smart, Nick Saban, stockpiling all the defensive line talent are over. Those, they do not get to have them all.

And because everybody's got a little money. And because they put that money in these guys, those guys look for places where they can go and get the most money. And that's why you're going to watch a little dip in the SEC product over the next few years, because they used to have an absolute run on the defensive line talent. Well, how fixable is it for him this year?

Do you still see a team that could go 10 and 2, make the college football playoffs, or is this headed for four losses again and potentially Kailen DeBarr being out in four months? There's no way Kailen DeBarr is going to be out, because like they can't afford the defensive line talent, they can't afford to fire him. He got too good a deal, which was the reason to take the job, financial security. And it's Alabama.

I mean, it's a heck of a place. But so too is Washington. The problem with Kailen's situation right now is he just doesn't have the same kind of depth that Nick Saban enjoyed, particularly on the defensive side. They were down at defensive line and going into that game.

Another guy just got hurt this week in practice. That's hard on a front, especially when you watch them play. It looked like they were petite. I'm not going to say they were loping, but they were not running as fast as Florida State.

And that's a concern for both Kailen and his defensive coordinator, Kane Womack. Well, Rick Newheisels with us on the air. Rick got a few more minutes. And I don't know how much of the Colorado State game you watched on Saturday.

I don't know how much of this UC Davis came with UW. You're going to see on Saturday. But man, Jonah Coleman's getting some Heisman hype. I saw one writer has him as his favorite and when the Heisman after week one, that's probably partly because no quarterback really stepped up and didn't think crazy in week one.

But Jonah Coleman, talk to us. Are you starting to hear whispers about this guy from your perch? Well, there's no question Jonah Coleman's a real player. And he's going to benefit the entire season as long as this quarterback, the Mon Williams, is there because the one Williams requires somebody's eyes on him at all times.

So in essence, he's a blocker. Regardless of what he's doing, somebody's going to go where he goes. And with that, you end up with a little bit more air to run into. Jed Bish is doing a nice job orchestrating the two of them.

And DeMond Williams continues to be a 75% passer last year. He was 78, 75% the other night. That is a recipe for great offense. They just need to make sure that the defense comes along for that ride and that defensive front is going to have to stay healthy.

Were you more glass half full or half empty about that defense because they got beat up a little bit early in the game, but they came back and looked good in the second half hardly gave him any yards in the second half of that football game? I'm going to always be glass half full, especially because I saw the corners when I went to the practice. Those guys were long and had the kind of hips that can flip and run. So I think when you can play corners and you can play man out there, I'm not saying that they need to all the time.

But when you can do that, you can end up adding numbers to the box and taking care of teams that are trying to help physical you. Yeah, you know, Rick, the LSU Clemson game where Dabo came out and said it was a terrible football game. And then Brian Kelly came out and said, hey, we enjoyed it. We thought it went well, at least in the second half.

I'm wondering if you watched the same game, I'm kind of hoping that with those two guys going at it that we might see a rematch, maybe in the college football playoff between Clemson and LSU. But what did you make and what you saw from those two teams? Because those are two quarterbacks that we thought would be maybe up there for the Heisman. And the performances were good, but not phenomenal.

Yeah, I think Nutsmeyer has some great gifts that we didn't know he had. Number one, he's got a little bit of a running game. That Caden Durham's a real player. Number two, he kept the ball away.

He realizes number three, he's got a defense. That defense was light years ahead of any other iteration of Brian Kelly LSU defense. They did some great things in the transfer quarter. They got a corner from Virginia Tech.

That's a really good player. They got a safety. They didn't get to play until the second half from Houston. He's a really good player.

LSU is going to be counted as long as they can stay healthy amongst the best in the SEC. Nutsmeyer is the real deal. I think club Nick's the real deal. I did not realize club Nick was as fast as he was on the grass the other night.

He reminds me of BONX. I think he's going to have a really good season. I think it would be very likely that these two teams both make the CFP. And it'd be fun to see that game again, especially with the back and forth between the coaches, about Tiger on Tiger Crying.

Speaking of coach on coach crime, what did you make of Mike Gundy and Dan Lanning? Mike Gundy talking about how much money Oregon spends? And Dan Lanning's just saying, hey, you know, we spend a win. Sorry if you don't.

A little bit of that was taken out of context. Because Mike Gundy was really showering the Oregon program with all kinds of praise. And that just kind of became a little bit of a soundbite. But for him to say that you should only be playing teams that pay the same amount is basically like saying, we're not, we don't belong in that league, which kind of sounds like you're making excuse before the back.

And I worry a little bit about Oklahoma State's chances this week. I went to the 28 point underdog. Yeah, something like that. They're going to play a quarterback that hasn't got a lot of experience.

They might be a Lions Dan, of course. Well, speaking of that, Taco Time pick of the week, I'm going to go with the number two meal. That's the Chris Beef Burrito combo, MEXI Fries and a drink. I'll make it easy, but your Taco Time pick of the week after getting back to 500 last week with the under on the Texas Ohio State game is what?

I kind of like now. These are not my choice. I'm just giving you a little precursor. I kind of like the 200 dogs, both Kansas and Michigan, but I'm not taking them.

I am going to Blacksburg, Virginia. Virginia Tech got beat last week by South Carolina and Lenora Sellers. It was a better game than the score indicated. Kyron Drones, the Virginia Tech quarterback, was, I don't know, off 15 to 35.

He's got to be much better this week. Here comes Vanderbilt. Remember Vanderbilt beat them last year, which kind of signaled that Vanderbilt might be a different team with Diego Pavia quarterback? I'm saying, because I think this is desperation time for bread pride, head coach.

I'm saying the Hokies and enter Sandman get it done against the common words. One and a half point line. Give me the Hokies. All right, Virginia Tech minus the point and a half at home against Vandy is the play.

Rick, great stuff. And we'll talk in a week, coach. Always the treat, boys. Enjoy.
