She was the Founder and inspirational leader for her fashion retail company, Fresh Produce, for over 30 years. Vernon, who was born in California but raised in Kansas, had been designing and sewing her own clothes since high school. She earned a degree in fashion design at Kansas State, before moving to California to launch her fashion career. Mary Ellen (Mare) Vernon first launched Fresh Produce with her husband, selling unique t-shirts in the parking lot of the LA Coliseum during the ’84 Olympics.
