La Riforma protestante fu un movimento di opposizione radicale alla Chiesa di Roma avviato nel sec. XVI dalla predicazione di Martin Lutero che comportò la rottura dell’unità religiosa dell’Europa cristiana. Dal punto di vista teologico luteranesimo e calvinismo rivendicavano un rapporto diretto del singolo con le Sacre Scritture (tradotte nelle lingue nazionali) negando la centralità della Chiesa e dei sacramenti. Sul piano politico molti principi tedeschi videro nell’adesione alla Riforma il mezzo per contrastare il disegno di centralizzazione statale dell’imperatore Carlo V. Ciò suscitò conflitti e rivolte che insanguinarono l’Europa per decenni. La Chiesa cattolica, già colpita dallo Scisma d’Oriente, reagì a questa nuova minaccia prima con la scomunica dei principi riformati e poi con la convocazione di un grande Concilio: il Concilio di Trento (1545-63). In questa sede non solo si riaffermarono i fondamenti teologici e disciplinari dell’ortodossia cattolica, ma si disciplinò anche la struttura ecclesiastica ponendo le basi per la riconquista delle nazioni passate al protestantesimo.
