from Dubuque Area Sports Podcast · host Nick Maneman
How does a small town kid from Dubuque, Iowa make it in the NFL? Tons of hard work, dedication, and always going the extra mile to start. Riley McCarron had a historic high school career as a multi sport athlete and was bound for a college baseball career. After an outstanding football season during his senior year, football coaches took notice. Riley hung up the baseball glove and grabbed a football helmet. Riley patiently waited his turn and during his senior year at the University of Iowa, opportunity came knocking. After an injury to a starting wide receiver, Riley jumped in and the Hawkeyes never looked back. Riley won Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, played in the Big Ten Championship Game, and played in the Rose Bowl. Right when Riley thought his football playing days were past him, the NFL came calling. Riley signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans and was coached by All-Pro Wide Receiver Wes Welker. Riley was later cut by the Texas, but landed with a dynasty of the New England Patriots. Riley eventually made the 53 man active roster and ended up earning a Super Bowl ring for New England. We talk Brady, Gronk, George Kittle, and so many other big names you see on Sunday. Riley leaves no stone unturned in this latest episode of the Dubuque Area Baseball Podcast.
