Hello Poison Friends! We need to discuss Johnson & Johnson's misadventure into mental healthcare. Once their previous antipsychotic, Haldol, neared its patent expiration, the company plotted to come up with a new atypical antipsychotic that could take its place and earn them more money. They presented Risperdal as a safer and more effective treatment for schizophrenia, even though studies suggested otherwise. They priced the drug so high, that even medicaid could not afford to cover it for those with schizophrenia or bipolar with psychosis. When it became clear that this one population was not enough to earn them the money they really wanted, they pushed to have the drug approved for Dementia in elderly patients and for just about any sign of anxiety or agitation in children. Antipsychotics can have significant side effects and Risperdal has been labeled as toxic to those not diagnosed with schizophrenia because of these.
