Dopo la guerra attraversa l'oceano, nasconde topi-cavie in una borsetta su un aereo per Rio de Janeiro, e nel 1952 scopre l'NGF, il fattore di crescita dei nervi che le varrà il Nobel, aprendo la strada alla comprensione di malattie come l'Alzheimer e il Parkinson.
