River ships range from  about 110–190 guests; fewer passengers often means more space and a more intimate feel. U.S. river cruising has a different (and often older) demographic and is generally more expensive due to U.S. flag requirements. Water levels can affect itineraries, but cruise lines have contingency plans and the issue impacts fewer than 5% of sailings on average.
