Outsourcing is always expensive and often dangerous for passengers and taxpayers. It is certainly miserable and impoverishing for workers. Logic would seem to be in favour of overturning it. Yet inefficient and costly as it is, outsourcing remains an extremely ‘efficient’ method for extracting profit and maximising shareholder dividends – especially when the state is forced to underwrite the operations of private corporations delivering vital services, stepping in to pick up the tab when all possible wealth has been extracted and the vultures have moved on to easier pickings.
