Rob Roy Introduction Part 2
from The Walter Scott Library Hosted by Sir Walter Scott
In which the life and character of Rob Roy MacGregor are outlined with careful attention to his Highland lineage, personal qualities, and the circumstances that turned him from a respected drover into an outlaw engaged in a private warfare against powerful neighbours, all set amidst the rugged and lawless backdrop of the Highlands. The narrative paints him as a robust and shrewd man, skilled in arms and intimately acquainted with his wild country, whose complex temperament combined generosity with violence, honour with cunning, and pursued his course with a mixture of principle and expediency.
