In which the young Mr. Osbaldistone seeks to unravel the tangled affairs of a mysterious acquaintance and confronts his kinsman, Rashleigh, whose resentment culminates in a fierce and narrowly averted duel, interrupted by the timely intervention of a formidable and enigmatic Scotsman. The episode closes with Mr. Osbaldistone tending to his slight wound and reflecting on the strange and perilous course his fortunes have taken amidst the learned solitude of Glasgow.
