Robert Alesch: Nazi Collaborator Priest Who Betrayed the French Resistance
from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History
Robert Alesch was a Catholic priest who became one of the most dangerous Nazi collaborators operating inside occupied France during the Second World War. During the Nazi occupation of France, betrayal did not always come from uniformed collaborators or political extremists. Sometimes it wore the face of moral authority. This documentary examines the life and crimes of Robert Alesch, one of the most dangerous Nazi collaborators operating inside occupied France. Born in 1906 and ordained as a Catholic priest, Alesch gained the trust of parishioners and resistance sympathizers alike. His openly anti-Nazi sermons and pro-Allied rhetoric convinced many that he was a man of conscience. In reality, Alesch was leading a double life. By 1942, he had been recruited by the Abwehr, Nazi Germany’s military intelligence service, and began systematically infiltrating French Resistance networks. Using his position and charisma, Alesch identified resistance members, intercepted messages intended for London, and passed critical intelligence directly to German authorities. His betrayals led to mass arrests, deportations, and deaths. Among his victims were members of the Gloria Network, including the renowned resistance figure Germaine Tillion, whose mother was later murdered at Ravensbrück concentration camp. Alesch also attempted to penetrate networks connected to Virginia Hall, one of the most effective Allied agents operating in France. Unlike ideological fanatics, Alesch acted primarily out of self-interest. He lived comfortably in Paris, received a high salary from German intelligence, and enriched himself while dozens of resistance fighters were tortured, executed, or sent to concentration camps. After the liberation of France, Alesch was arrested, tried for intelligence with the enemy, and found fully responsible for his actions. The court rejected all claims of coercion or diminished responsibility. In 1949, Robert Alesch was executed by firing squad, ending the career of a man whose betrayal devastated entire resistance networks. This film explores how trust was weaponized under occupation—and how one man’s ambition turned faith into a tool of destruction. This episode is part of the series Fascist Collaborators.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
