Romanovs and the Russian Soul: Orthodox Faith & Identity

While we often focus on the political machinations, wars, and personal dramas of the Romanov dynasty, this episode explores the spiritual bedrock that held the empire together for three centuries. We examine how the Tsars used Orthodoxy not just as a religion, but as a tool of statecraft and identity. Lucas walks us through the schism of the 17th century, the fierce reforms of Patriarch Nikon, and the subsequent rise of the Old Believers who fled into the forests rather than compromise their faith. Luna asks about the everyday impact of these theological battles on the common people and how the church’s authority wavered between absolute loyalty to the throne and genuine pastoral care. Together, they trace the evolution of the 'Third Rome' concept, from Muscovy’s self-image to the complex relationship with Western European powers, revealing a dynasty deeply entangled in matters of the soul long before the final bloody end at Yekaterinburg. #RomanovDynasty #RussianOrthodoxChurch #PatriarchNikon #OldBelievers #RaskolSchism #TsarAlexei #ThirdRome #Muscovy #RussianHistory #FexingoHistory #EasternEurope #ImperialRussia #CzaristRussia #ReligiousReform #Avvakum #Boyars #SiberiaExile #FaithAndPower #HistoryPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
